Altec Lansing Octiv 450 review

Speaker docks for the iPhone are ten-a-penny, so it's great to see a product that's been built for the iPad, though you can dock an iPhone or iPod in the Altec Lansing Octiv 450 as well.Designed largely to complement the iPad's video playing abilities, it's best used in landscape orientation, has stereo speakers, an adjustable holder and a remote control. This well-thought-out combination means you can pop the device on your coffee table, adjust the angle of the iPad to suit and then slump down on the sofa and enjoy your favourite movies or stream live TV without having to move. The iPad slides firmly into the arm, sits snugly against the supports and is held in on three sides. The dock connector charges your device, but there's no USB port, so no syncing to iTunes unfortunately. The angling arm is stiff, so once you've set it, your iPad will remain how you left it. The slight downside is that you need two hands to adjust it, especially to bring it towards you, or you'll flip the unit up. As well as angling your iPad, you can rotate it through 180 degrees while it's mounted, so you can use it either way up in landscape or portrait.

Altec Lansing Octiv Stage MP450 Review

Review: Altec Lansing's Octiv Stage MP450 iPad dock manages to squeeze dual full-range speakers that help it pump out fine sound for its size. When it comes to picking a speaker dock, iPod owners have no trouble finding a device for every taste and budget, but finding one for its larger cousin the iPad can still be a challenge. Altec Lansing's Octiv Stage is a speaker dock for your iPad featuring a unique design in which the back brace and iPad connector are built into an arm that both rotates and folds backwards. the Octiv Stage works great in your bedroom, kitchen or any other area of the house, where you can take advantage of external speakers and software applications available on the iPad.Once the iPad is docked, you can rotate the screen to the desired position: landscape or portrait mode. We aren’t sure what the advantage to folding the iPad flat in the dock would be, but the option is there if you want it. In the kitchen, the docked iPad becomes a useful tool for listening to music, reading the daily paper, looking up that recipe or simply checking the weather. And in the bedroom, the iPad coupled with the Octiv Stage makes for the perfect nightstand companion.

Altec Lansing Octiv Stage MP450

When we got our first glimpse of Altec Lansing's Octiv Stage MP450 docking speaker system for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod, we were pretty intrigued by its design--it reminded us of the old armature G4 iMacs. Basically, once you've docked your iPad, the built-in "rotating connection arm" allows you to adjust the iPad to be viewed in portrait or landscape mode at multiple viewing angles. When you place it in an almost flat position, you can even type on your iPad while it's docked. Altec Lansing has geared this accessory ($149.99 list) toward people who want to watch video on their iPads--whether it be in the kitchen, bedroom, or anywhere else--and the company has built the speaker with that in mind. The company says its Audio Alignment technology "provides distinctive center channel voicing and enhanced stereo delivery for distortion-free performance even at full volume." The system also has a 3.5mm auxiliary jack for connecting additional audio sources. As far features go, that's really it. There's a power button and volume controls on the front of the speaker, and you get a small remote. We would've liked to see the USB port found in the Octiv Duo for charging phones and other portable devices.

Altec Lansing Octiv Stage (MP450)

In the growing market of iPad-ready speaker docks, Altec Lansing's first foray proves a mixed bag. The Octiv Stage (MP450) ($149.95 direct) doesn't sound horrible, but it doesn't sound like a $150 speaker dock, either; it has very little low end and distorts at high volumes. The clever dock arm poses the iPad in horizontal, vertical, and even flat positions, but that's the dock's only great feature. Altec Lansing's free alarm clock app isn't compatible; the dock goes into sleep mode and, much like you if you try to use it, it won't wake up when the alarm goes off. The iPad doesn't yet support full remote control navigation, so the included remote has some useless buttons as well (though that's not entirely Altec's fault). It seems Altec (as well as a smattering of the competition) has perhaps entered the iPad dock market before Apple is ready to fully support it. Measuring 4.3 by 8.6 by 6.0 inches (HWD), the base of the Octiv Stage is a rounded black plastic rectangle with sloped side panels and black cloth grilles housing a pair of two-inch speaker drivers. The dock arm extends from the top panel, and features an excellent swivel mechanism that allows you to easily place the iPad exactly how you want it - flat for easy typing, at a near 90-degree angle, or any degree in between.
