Rapidly becoming as well-known for its mini PCs as it is for its Nvidia-based graphics cards, Zotac has released yet another version of the ZBox. This time it's the diminutive ZBox ID80 Plus; the 'Plus' meaning that the unit comes with memory and a hard drive pre-installed. The ZBox is the bulky, bigger brother of the ZBox Nano. This ZBox employs a desktop version of Intel's latest Atom platform refreshes, codenamed Cedar Trail. The new CPU's have had a die shrink - 32nm down from 45nm - and uses an entirely new GPU core. The D2700 Atom CPU comes with a 2.13GHz clock speed and - whereas the previous processors only supported DDR3 up to 667MHz - Cedar Trail processor support, DDR3-800 and 1,066MHz. With a TDP of 10W the desktop part is also very power efficient; with the new mobile part even more so. The biggest change in the new Atom platform - apart from the die shrinkage - is in the design of the graphics. The previous generation of Atom CPUs used the GMA3150, which was based on the GMA3100 GPU, but in the new architecture the graphics are powered by a PowerVR SGX 545 from Imagination Technologies.
A new era of home entertainment is upon us. If you think about how you watch TV today versus 10 or even five years ago, it's probably a completely different experience. Nearly everything is served up in high definition, digital video recorders (DVRs) are now the norm and not the exception, and streaming services are making a big push to be the primary way in which you view content traditionally served up by cable and satellite TV. Unless you live way out in the boonies, you're probably rocking a broadband Internet connection, which is your gateway to any number of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, VUDU, Pandora, and so forth. With so much online content to choose from, you could easily ditch your cable provider and not skip a beat. In order to do that, you need a way to pipe all that content into your living room. Companies looking to cash in on the streaming craze have begun rolling out set-top media players at a frenzied pace. Minus a fancy feature here and there, these are mostly basic boxes designed to grab hold of feeds from cyberspace and pipe them through to your HDTV. They're simple solutions, but not as sexy as a dedicated home theater PC (HTPC).
Before we could get our hands on the netbooks sporting second generation of Atom processors from Intel codenamed Cedar Trail, ZOTAC sent us its now-famous ZBOX units. The ZBOX PLUS ID80 is the first ZBOX to sport the Intel Cedar Trail D2700 processors. The Cedar trail platform was announced towards the end of December last year, and is a significant shift from the previous Atom Pinetrail platform. For starters the clock speeds have improved and also the GPU clock speeds have seen a great bump from the ones seen on Pine Trail N570 processor. Also the manufacturing process has moved from 45nm to 32nm. Currently there are three processors in the Cedar Trail lineup namely N2600, N2800 and D2700, the N implying for netbooks and D for Desktops. Going by the naming conventions, the TDP for N2600 is 5W, N2800 is 8W and D2700 is 10W. Design wise the ZBOX looks like any other ZBOXes we have tested in the past. It has the blue coloured circular orb on its front black glossy face. The vent for the fan section is located on the top whereas the front and rear portion have the battery of port connections. In the front you have a single USB port, an SD card slot and the audio and mic jacks. Power button is located at the top. Coming to the rear side and starting from the top you have - the Wifi port, two USB 3.0 ports, a LAN port, two USB 2.0 ports, a DVI port, an HDMI port and the power jack. That was quite a mouthful.
