Zotac IONITX-P-E Integrated Motherboard Review

With the rise in popularity of HTPC and small form factor media/gaming rigs as well as the rise in electricity costs, low power high performance platforms are taking center stage. With the inception of the ION platform, the once back shelf products are now receiving a new lease on life. We have seen a number of ATOM/ION based combos being released however they still did not offer the bang that some customers were looking for. As a way of background, these small ITX form factor boards are paired with low power processors and GPUs designed to offer the user a platform that will provide them with strong media capabilities as well as some casual gaming in a compact, low-power design. While not able to break world records, they are perfect as high definition media players and small gaming rigs. Zotac has been one of the pioneers in the ITX platform and now they have taken the ION platform a bit further by coupling it with an ultra low voltage Intel Celeron processor designed to give the user a boost in performance over the ATOM combination. I have seen SU Celeron's in laptops but this is a first for me seeing it in a desktop setup.

Zotac IONITX-P-E Mini-ITX Motherboard Review

Today you see more and more home media servers and HTPC's being sold on the market, along with the parts to build your own. I use a home media server for my PS3 and my other computers so that I can transfer and watch movies all over my house. This also gives me the ability to stream music to all of the PC's and other wireless Devices. With all of our home electronics becoming more and more connected it's convenient to have a media server. It allows me to control the music and movies in any of the rooms with PC's on them with either my Android phone or my iPad. The possibilities are endless. In this review we will be taking a look at the Zotac IONITX-P-E which is an Mini-ITX motherboard with the processor embedded in to the motherboard. Mini-ITX is a very small form factor about half the size of a mATX setup. The Zotac IONITX-P-E comes in a relatively small box in its retail shape. The box is black and orange to go with Zotac's longtime color scheme that they have had. On the front of the box we have the basic info and name of the motherboard. On the back side there is more information about the product, along with a detailed picture pointing out the features on the motherboard.

Zotac IONITX-P-E review

We're big fans of NVIDIA's plucky little ION motherboard chipset. What we haven't enjoyed is the feeble Intel Atom processor it's been saddled with. But what if you could have all the yummy graphics goodness of ION combined with a tastier CPU? Luckily, that's the very meaning of the Zotac IONITX-P-E's existence. Kiss goodbye to the dreadful Atom chip. Say hello to an Intel Celeron SU2300. One of Intel's lesser known and more esoteric processor models, the SU2300 is a low voltage version of ye olde Core 2 CPU running at 1.2GHz. Simply add memory, storage and a power supply, therefore, and you have a pukka PC. Indeed, VGA, HDMI and even dual-link DVI connectivity are supplied as standard giving you the option to drive everything from a high resolution desktop PC to a home cinema system. Intriguingly, Zotac has also provided a full 16-lane PCI Express expansion slot enabling high-end discrete graphics as an option. If the ION chipset part of the Zotac IONITX-P-E motherboard is a well-known quantity, the Intel Celeron SU2300 CPU is something of a head scratcher. True to recent Intel tradition, the branding (in this case the ancient Celeron moniker) isn't much help. But no matter.
