Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition Review
Building a new computer isn’t the easiest of tasks. You’ve got to choose the right processor, RAM, motherboard and most importantly, the graphics card. This is where the Zotac GeForce GTX 500 Ti AMP! Edition comes in to play. It retails for around the £100 mark and offers 1GB of GDDR5 memory. Also, thanks to the GTX 550 Ti being carefully tweaked and tuned for the best performance possible, it should prove to be a relatively cheap and great performing card. Let’s take a closer look… Design The overall look of the card is fairly sharp and attractive with a black and dark yellow colour scheme. Obviously, we’ve got the fan in the centre of the card, a single 75mm fan to be exact. The fan is situated just above the heat sink, which is attached to the GPU. As you can tell from the image below, the GTX 550 Ti does not feature any fancy heat pipes or advanced cooling solutions, but in terms of power to heat ratio, it shouldn’t need as much cooling as some of the more expensive, and even more powerful, graphics cards. The rear of the card carries on the black and yellow theme with a completely black board. If you look in the top corner, you can also see the 2-way SLI connection.
Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition
Filling out a catalog of products isn't always painless, especially when competition is tight. On paper, Nvidia's new GeForce GTX 550 Ti GPU is a strong idea, coming in at around $149 list, and shoring up a specific section of the sub-$200 segment that neither Nvidia nor AMD definitively owns. But that smart pricing turns out to be something of a problem given the performance the card offers, even in something as attractive Zotac's overclocked version, the GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition ($159 list). Caught in a cluster of other cards optimized for the mainstream 1,680-by-1,050 resolution, it doesn't distinguish itself enough with its capabilities, becoming convincing only if you can shell out the asking price - and hardly any more. Despite what its name may suggest, the GTX 550 Ti does not replace last generation's GTS 450, but instead supplements it - going "over and above," as Nvidia told us, for just slightly more money ($149 versus $129 list). Besides the naming scheme (Nvidia is dropping the GTS line to make it more clear that all its gaming cards belong together), the differences are mostly a matter of degree, just as many of the 500-series cards have seen to this point.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti Debut: Zotac, MSI and Asus
For the purposes of this article, we acquired a trio of retail ready GeForce GTX 550 Ti cards from three of NVIDIA's premiere board partners, Zotac, Asus, and MSI. All three of these cards are factory overclocked and feature custom coolers and PCB designs. As was the case with the GeForce GTX 450, there will be many GeForce GTX 550 Ti cards overclocked right out of the gate, hence the arrival of the cards you see pictured here. The Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition card is the highest clocked of the cards we'll be featuring here, yet it is also the smallest. The Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition card sports a 1GHz GPU clock, with 2GHz shaders, and 1GB of 1100MHz (4400MHz effective) GDDDR5 memory. The output configuration on the card consists of a pair of dual-link DVI outputs, an HDMI output, and a DisplayPort output, although only two outputs can be used simultaneously. Bundled with the Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition card, we found a few pieces of documentation, a case badge, a DVI to VGA adapter, and a single PCI Express 6-pin power adapter. There was also an obligatory driver / utility CD, which contained copies of some useful apps, like vReveal, Nero Vision Xtra, CoolIris, XBMC, and Kylo.

Recent releases, such as the AMD Radeon HD 6990 and Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 have focused on high-end DX11 graphics, but what about the more-affordable DX11 graphics cards? Those looking to get their hands on reasonable levels of performance haven't exactly been spoilt for choice lately. The likes of the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 and AMD Radeon HD 5750 are looking a little long in the tooth now, but still hover around the £100 mark. Could this Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! represent a new dawn for DX11?Apart from a little tweaking of the name – the S has been transformed into an X and the needless Ti suffix has been added, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti suggests that this is a next-generation replacement for the existing Nvidia GeForce GTS 450. A card that originally shipped with a £100 price tag, but can now be had for a mere £88 if you shop around.
