Zalman S-Series 128GB Solid State Drive Review

Solid state drives are the future, faster speeds, no moving parts and they are smaller. The only thing really holding them back right now is their price. Most solid state drives we have seen have been from traditional memory and storage companies. We all know Zalman for making great CPU coolers and cases, so it is a bit weird we see them release a solid state drive. They actually have 2 right now, today we will be looking at the S-Series 128GB drive, which is based on the JMicron controller so it is the mainstream budget drive out of the 2 that they have released. Let’s take a look... Special thanks to Zalman for providing us with the S-Series 128GB Solid State drive to review. The S-Series solid state drive comes in a typical SSD packaging. On the front there is a large S-Series logo. On the back there is some information about the drive. Opening up the package and getting everything out you have the S-Series solid state drive, USB cable, and a quick install guide. The S-Series solid state drive looks much like many other solid state drives that we have reviewed. It has the same 2.5-inch form factor and has a black aluminum casing. On the front there is a large sticker with the S-Series logo on it.

Zalman S Series 128GB SSD Review

With the ever-accelerating expansion in the SSD industry as prices plummet and speeds multiply, no one company has been able to corner the market and knock out the competition. Many companies have seen value in the SSD sector and have decided to jump into the open fray and try its hand at the game. You may now add Zalman to that list. Most people know Zalman for its very numerous and popular cooling solutions, as well as itsr cases and smaller accessories. Zalman has never really done anything major in the storage market until this new SSD push. To begin with, Zalman is pushing out two fairly cookie cutter SSD lines - the N Series and the S Series. The N Series is its higher end, higher priced, SandForce-based line, with drives up to 256GB. The S Series is a bit more mainstream with a lower price and a JMicron controller. The S Series is offered up to 128GB and is what this review focuses on. Glancing at the specs (read up to 260MB/s, write up to 210MB/s, TRIM support), everything looks like a solid SSD, but will Zalman's first push into the market succeed? I intend to find out! Being the budget minded series, I would expect Zalman to refrain from putting too much fluff into such minor things as packaging.

Zalman s-series 128gb jmicron ssd solid state drive review

Solid state drives are generating more buzz as time goes on, and for good reason. They provide many advantages over traditional hard drives. A big draw to this new technology is no moving parts inside the drive. This translates into silent operation, zero heat, and a very, very slim chance of mechanical failure. It also means better durability - a solid state drive can easily survive a fall to the floor. Of course, improved performance is also a good reason to consider a SSD. Read speeds in particular are noticeably faster and more consistent with a solid state drive, and you can count on improved write speeds as well. Unlike a platter hard drive, the location of data on a SSD is irrelevant and therefore doesn't adversely affect performance. Whether you've already worked with solid state drives or are new to them, Zalman has a new offering to toss into the quickly expanding market. Their S-Series line of solid state drives feature optimization for AHCI mode, Windows 7 TRIM support, and is powered by a JMicron controller. Turn the page and come along with me as I put this new SSD to the test.
