Zalman is well known for their vast array of quality cooling products and today, that’s no exception. Today we get to take a look at the Zalman CNPS9900 MAX CPU Cooler, which can come with either red or blue (we have) LEDs. Its circular design features a dual heatsink design with a centered 135mm ultra quiet fan. This goes along well with its black-pearl nickel plating all over the cooler. With this cooler keep up with the cooling quality of Zalman? Read on further to find out. Optimally designed pure copper fins effectively disperse heat away from the CPU via composite heatpipes, while the high capacity 135mm fan quickly cools the heatsink for stable operation of high performance CPUs. The entire copper heatsink of CNPS9900 MAX is ‘Black-Pearl’ Nickel Plated for long-term corrosion resistance, while the deep ‘Black-Pearl’ tone along with the high intensity Blue / Red LEDs reinforce its powerful aesthetics. The PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) Fan automatically adjusts fan speed (RPM) according to the CPU’s temperature, while the included Resistor Cable (RC7P) provides the option of reducing the input voltage for overall reduction of fan speed and noise.
We were ready to write Zalman off for good. Its much-beloved 9000-series copper heatsinks (culminating in the CNPS9900, which received a Kick Ass award in March 2009) were blown away by the advent of skyscraper-style coolers like the Thermalright Ultra-120. Zalman’s attempt at a skyscraper-style cooler, the CNPS 10X, was a bust, aesthetically and thermally. But now, Zalman’s returned to what it knows best: circular copper arrays surrounding a central fan. The CNPS9900 Max looks like a darker version of the CNPS9900. In this age of dual-fan skyscraper behemoths, can Zalman catch up? At 3.7 inches deep by 5.15 inches wide by 5.9 inches high, the CNPS9900 Max is virtually identical to its predecessor. It, too, has three heatpipes—one in the front, two in the back—surrounded by two sets of heat-dissipating copper fins. The only real differences are the finish and the fan. The Max’s fan is 13.5cm compared to the 12cm of its predecessor (and comes in either red-LED or blue-LED versions), and the Max has a smoky-black nickel coating, which has the possibly intentional side effect of making the fins much less likely to draw blood. The Max also ships with an included resistor cable to put the fan in quiet performance mode, but it’s plenty quiet even without that cable.
Zalman is one manufacturer of computer cooling solutions that I remember the most from years ago. I remember seeing its unique products all over the web and locally in stores during the ancient days where the early Pentium 4 and the AMD Athlon chips ruled the market - such as the copper flower and early CNPS heatsinks. I also have strong memories of Zalman's video card coolers and its love of copper as the main building block for these cooling setups. Founded in 1999, the Korean company now offers all sorts of computer products, starting with low noise and noiseless heatsinks and GPU coolers, then continuing to broader markets that include audio products, solid state hard drives and docking stations, power supplies, and even 3D monitors. Today, in this review, I will be testing the Zalman CNPS9900 MAX heatsink. It boasts an all nickel plated copper construction, and of course has the CNPS (Computer Noise Prevention System) in the model name. The heatpipes are said to be improved thanks to its internal construction, which possesses a certain composite groove structure that increases the heat transfer rate by 50%.
Back when their CNPS9500 Cooler first hit the shelves, Zalman was the king of heatsinks. With its radical design and excellent performance, the CNPS9500 quickly excelled. Since then, other manufacturers, such as Noctua and Prolimatech, have come to the market with excellent performance heatsinks that quickly grabbed the headlines. In response, Zalman has recently introduced the CNPS9900 Max, which continues the old tradition of combining excellent performance cooler with an eye-catching design. Is this new heatsink capable of putting Zalman back to the forefront of enthusiasts' minds when they pick a cooler for their overclocking? Let's find out. The Zalman CNPS9900 Max features the company's new composite heatpipe design, that is promised to be more effective at conducting heat. With a 135mm red or blue led PWM controlled fan sandwiches between three omega shaped heatpipes, it is designed to effectively cool both modern Intel and AMD processors. Zalman packages the CNPS9900 Max in a very pretty retail box. Not only do we see a preview of the heatsink through the transparent plastic casing, we also get plenty of information about the features and specifications of the heatsink.
Zalman has a long and storied history in the PC aftermarket. Their reputation for high-quality, relatively quiet cooling products has been earned over the course of more than twenty years in this highly competitive market. Zalman adapted heatpipe cooling technology for the PC very early in its development and their cooler designs have not only been top performers, but visually striking as well. Enter Zalman's newest CPU cooler, the CNPS 9900 MAX. At first glance, the MAX may appear to be a rehash of their earlier 9900 series, but as we'll soon see, nothing could be further from the truth. Follow along as we see just what sets this new cooling option apart, both from the competition and from Zalman's earlier 9900-series coolers. Despite the fact that computers have become commonplace at home and at workplaces for a long time, true user-friendliness of the computers is still a long shot. At Zalman Tech, we strive to make that goal a closer reality through extensive research and development of our products. We were the world first in reducing computer's noise down to lower than 20dB, thus creating a more user-friendly computing environment.
