XFX Radeon HD 6950 1GB XXX Edition Review

The original Radeon HD 6950 cards shipped with a 2GB frame buffer, and you can still get those if you want. But some manufacturers have begun shipping the HD 6950 with 1GB of video memory, which is a fine fit for the current generation of 1080p displays. XFX has taken the 1GB 6950 a step further, juicing up both the GPU and memory clocks and adding a custom cooler that XFX says will keep the card cooler and run more quietly than the default AMD-designed cooler. The new cooler uses a pair of propeller-bladed fans that turn more slowly than the paddle wheel fan in the reference cooling system. The XXX Edition’s core clock speed is 830MHz, almost 4 percent over the 800MHz reference clock; the 1,300MHz memory is clocked about 8 percent over the reference 1,200MHz memory frequency. The XXX Edition has the usual set of outputs, including a pair of DVI connectors (one of which is only single-link), one HDMI 1.4a port, and a pair of Mini DisplayPort connections. The logical competition for this card (given its price point and features) is a card like MSI’s N560GTX-Ti, built around Nvidia’s GTX 560 Ti GPU.

XFX HD6950 1GB Overclocked Edition Review

With the explosion of overclocking years ago, we are finding more and more manufacturers are endorsing and embracing overclocking of their products. This included products from NVIDIA to Intel and AMD, to other component manufacturers such as XFX, MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, etc. Along with this endorsement comes a wider range of product support and quality. Recently, many manufacturers are boasting higher quality military grade components that will allow users to overclock products further and with more stability and efficiency. Over the past several years, we almost never fail to see a new line of video cards coming out and within weeks, have an overclocked version of it — usually with a better cooling solution as well. In some cases, some video cards even release as twins where the brother or sister is an overclocked version! Having this huge support for overclocking by many manufacturers also opens the market for better aftermarket cooling solutions. After all, the factory coolers on these products are generally designed and produced with the limit being stock speeds.

Xfx hd 6950 xxx review

After it initial release, the AMD Radeon HD 6950 became the popular option that enthusiasts and gamers were considering the best bang for the buck if an upgrade to AMD's latest generation of videocard was considered. Not only did it provide solid gaming performance with sufficient power to play even the newest games with above average resolution and quality settings, it also became a target for tweakers which could in part upgrade it to a pseudo HD 6970 though a quick BIOS flash. As for the overclockers, the HD 6950 2Gb didn't seem to be an overclockers dream whereas the 1Gb variety seemed to overclock much higher than its more memory laden twin brother. Continuing down that patch, XFX has capitalized on this advantage by releasing the XFX HD 6950 XXX version which is modestly overclocked by 30Mhz core and 50Mhz DDR5 memory right out of the box for about US$20 more than the stock clocked version. But XFX didn't just stop there and throw the card into the package for consumers. They also strapped on a much more substantial cooler to keeps temperatures low and thus keep the card as stable as possible.
