XFX Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition Review

With each new graphics release, a cycle can be observed regarding the rollout of specialty cards to the masses, further diversifying each series. First, stock cards are rushed to the market with MSRP stickers with discounts few and far between. Next, after a moderate decline in initial demand, the vendors cut the stock card's pricing and manufacturers get the okay to begin pushing out factory overclocked specialty cards. These cards come in all different flavors and increments of warranteed speed. Sapphire, for instance, produces their top-tier Vapor-X cooling system to couple with their products to offer an additional few valuable degrees off of your card's operating temperature for your top dollar. XFX takes a similar approach in its tiered factory OC options. Its flagship cards however carry a renowned Black Edition label that carries recognition anywhere computers are worshiped. This Black Edition card looks like it will carry on the series admirably with key features such as Stereoscopic 3D support, Full Eyefinity support, Crossfire X Technology and an impressive dual-fan direct contact heat pipe heat sink sitting on an already notable overclock.

AMD 6800 Series Review

In addition to the offering from Sapphire we have two cards to look at from XFX. The HD 6870 and their non-reference version of the HD 6850 of which they have two different designs, One that is heat pipe equipped and one that is Vapor Chamber equipped. The one we will be looking at today is the heat pipe equipped card. The packaging of the XFX HD 68XX cards are almost identical with the main difference being the name listed on the front. This graphic is mirrored through to the graphics card inside. The design is very minimalist with little information on the front of each box. Highlights include the mention of XFX 5 star support that should be helpful if the unthinkable happens. The rear panel contains the list of the HD 6800 series feature set that includes DX 11 support, Eyefinity technology, Display Port 1.2, HDMI 1.4a, Crossfire Support, Enhanced UVD 3 decoder and more. The box internals are incredibly similar so I am only going to show one package. The internal packaging is black with the XFX logo with the Play Hard slogan underneath and the XFX web link to the right. Flipping open the lid you get a tray that houses the extent of the accessory bundle.

XFX Radeon HD 6870

As we explained in our introduction to AMD’s brand-new Radeon HD 6000-series, which you can read here, the Radeon HD 6870 is the second in a series of new GPUs optimized for DirectX 11 games. Despite the naming scheme, however, the 6870 is not AMD’s new top-shelf GPU: The 6870 is more comparable to the older 5850, but it’s much cheaper and consumes considerably less power. The real targets AMD is gunning for here are Nvidia’s mid-priced 768MB and 1GB GeForce 460 GPUs. XFX’s take on the Radeon HD 6870 hews much closer to AMD’s reference design than their Radeon HD 6850 card did (you can read that review here), with a mounting bracket featuring two mini-DisplayPort 1.2 connectors, one HDMI 1.4a, one dual-link DVI, and one single-link DVI. XFX’s core and memory clock speeds are also the same as AMD’s reference design: 900- and 1,050MHz, respectively. The spec chart helps explains why the Radeon HD 6870 fails to overcome the older high-end part: The new GPU has 480 fewer stream processors, 24 fewer texture units, and its 1GB of GDDR5 memory runs at a slower clock speed (1,050MHz versus 1,200MHz).
