XFX HD5870 2 GB Eyefinity6 with 6 monitors

One of the new features of the HD5xxxx series of video cards is Eyefinity, the technique that allows you to hook up several monitors to the video card and have the OS see it as one big monitor. While regular HD5xxx cards can support up to 3 monitors the ultimate Eyefinity experience can only be had with a HD5870 Eyefinity6 Edition video card which, as its name implies, supports up to 6 monitors at the same time. AMD was kind enough to lend us 6 monitors so we could test one of these cards and in today's review we test to see if the XFX HD5870 Eyefinity6 Edition video card together with 6 nice Dell monitors indeed does deliver the ultimate gaming experience. The ability to hook up more than one monitor to your video card is not really a new feature and has been possible for many years regardless if you have been using an ATI/AMD card, a NVIDIA card or a card from any of the other minor players. What makes Eyefinity different is that it makes it possible to combine the attached monitors in different ways so that they are seen as one (or more) larger monitors by the OS. AMD isn't actually the first company to offer this feature.

XFX Radeon HD 5870 Review

The wheel has now come full circle: AMD, once content to leave the high end of the graphics processor market to Nvidia, is lording over its rival with a GPU that’s not only supremely powerful, but reasonably affordable, too. Then again, affordability lies in the eye of the beholder, and you might not think that $380 for a new video card is the least bit reasonable. But it wasn’t all that long ago that acquiring the unquestioned number-one card would set you back $600—and some people were buying two to achieve even faster performance and higher resolution. But the 5870 isn’t just scorching fast, it’s also the first—and currently only—GPU that’s capable of playing games based on Microsoft’s DirectX 11, the next-generation programming environment that promises to open new whole new vist—uh, well, let’s just say DirectX 11 should enable game developers to build some fantastic looking new games. But you don’t need to wait for those games to arrive to tap this chip’s power—the good news is that it’s supremely fast with the most demanding games on the market right now.

XFX Radeon HD 5870

The Radeon HD 5870 is AMD's latest high-end GPU offering and XFX is one of the first vendors out the door with cards available for the mass market. The Radeon HD 5870 is manufactured using a 40nm fabrication process and in this case, runs at a frequency of 850MHz. Its 1GB of high-fast GDDR5 memory on the other hand ticks along at 4.8GHz. Decent specifications but the big news is that this GPU fully supports Microsoft's forthcoming DirectX 11, so you'll be able to enjoy games such as Colin McRae Dirt 2 in full visual splendor. (The card ships with a key code that will allow you to download and play the full version of the game when it becomes available.) This new GPU also supports AMD's new Eyefinity technology which allows you to run six monitors in HD mode from a single card. The technology isn't compatible with every game on the market but games such as Crysis, Far Cry 2 and Half Life 2 can be run using this technology. Trying these we're happy to say that the technology helped immerse us into the game further and whereas traditional multi-monitor setups have proved difficult to work with, when it comes to games, Eyefinity's experience was quite straightforward.
