Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB Hard Drive

Ten years ago, the Western Digital Raptor wowed users with its 10K RPM drive which brought significant performance improvement on the storage. It quickly won over many PC enthusiasts and gamers due to much better performance as a result of its faster spindle speed compared to standard desktop storage solutions. Mechanical drives can increase performance by either spinning at a faster speed or increase areal density. By combining both options, the Raptor is able to deliver performance gain over other drives, even if they have high areal density. Over the last few years, the landscape of storage for performance PC's has changed dramatically as SSDs have burst onto the scene, becoming the de facto choice of drive for enthusiasts. The SSD's superior random read and write performance significantly improves a system's overall performance as applications launch faster and data retrieval at almost instantaneously rate. Despite its performance, SSDs are still relatively expensive and the price-to-storage capacity ratio is much higher compared to that of mechanical drive. A 240GB SSD costs at $300 whereas the same price can buy a 3TB hard drive. Although SSD prices have been dropping steadily over the last couple of years, we do not expect to see match the same price per GB that hard drives have.

Western Digital VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX 600GB

At 10,000 rpm, the Western Digital VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX drive certainly spins faster than the competition. But do faster rotations per minute translate into faster performance? VelociRaptor drives have been out for two years; PC World Labs tests, however, show that they may not have as much advantage as they once did. Compared with standard desktop drives that spin at up to 7200 rpm, the VelociRaptor had a distinct edge. But the performance gap narrowed considerably when the latest VelociRaptor--one of the very few hard drives today with a 600-gbps SATA connection--went up against another SATA-600 drive, from Seagate. (The new VelociRaptor is also pricey, with a 600GB drive costing $329, as of 5/10/2010.) Like its predecessor, the 600GB VelociRaptor (also available in a 450GB version, for $299) is actually a 2.5-inch hard drive, mounted into WD's "IcePack" 3.5-inch drive sled that doubles as a heat sink. The drive installs seamlessly into a standard 3.5-inch drive bay. Its fast 10,000-rpm spec classifies it as the performance-minded drive to beat, and its 600GB capacity, though paltry compared with a standard drive's 2TB, represents an impressive doubling over the previous capacity.

Reviews: Internal Hard Drives

WD has recently updated its VelociRaptor which returns in an even higher performance version, even bigger... even fiercer. Who can stop the old dinosaur? Is it going to cause carnage in our tests again? In its favour the new WD6000HLHX can count the recent SATA-3 interface which supports up to 6 Gbps. The cache memory is up to 32 MB and rotation speed still at 10,000 rpm. Note that the 450 GB version (WD4500HLHX) offers the same spec as this 600 GB. As with all VelociRaptors, the guarantee is 5 years. The drive conserves its 2.5 inch format but it will still be impossible to install it in a laptop because it's twice as thick as your standard drive. It is moreover mounted on a 3.5 inch format cooler which isn't only there for decorative purposes. So we put the VelociRaptor in the 3.5 inch drive class. No arguments! Don't be fooled by the 2-star rating. The VelociRaptor gives good performance... at least as far as hard drives go. Because in contrast to the final overall rating, the pure performance rating is scaled to all current available drives, including the unbeatable SSDs. All the same, in its category, this drive is a monster.

Western Digital's answer to SSD speed is its spinning platter hero, the VelociRaptor, and now it's got capacity too with 600GBs of storage space.Want storage performance though? Get an SSD.Sounds simple, but there is a snag. Solid state drives are still silly money.Enter, therefore, the Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB WD6000HLHX. Western Digital claims it's the world's fastest conventional magnetic hard drive with a SATA interface.If true, that effectively makes it the quickest hard disk for desktop PCs. Whether it can compete with SSDs for raw performance, however, is another matter. Still, one thing is for sure. At £235, the 600GB VelociRaptor is expensive for a hard disk.1TB disks such as Western Digital's own Caviar Black can be had for £75 or less. But compared to an SSD, you get a lot more storage for your money.Comparatively priced SSDs are no bigger than 100GB. Indeed, some 100GB SSDs, such as the Patriot Inferno, are significantly pricier.In that context, the VelociRaptor probably doesn't need to match the fastest SSDs for performance. It just has to be in the same ball park.
