Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue 256GB Solid State Drive Review

Over the past year we have looked at quite a number of solid state drives. The surprising thing is that these drives have been from companies that are not known for storage products. They have mainly been from memory companies like OCZ, Corsair and Crucial. It is about time one of the big storage companies we all know stepped up and released a solid state drive. Well today we have one such drive from Western Digital. Today we will be taking a look at the SiliconEdge Blue 256GB solid state drive. This drive features read speeds of up to 250MB/s and write speeds of up to 170MB/s. Let’s take a look... Special thank to Western Digital for providing us with the SiliconEdge Blue 256GB Solid State Drive to review. We received this drive directly from Western Digital so it comes just like an OEM drive would. So it is inside a plain brown box. When you open the box up it is protected by 2 black inserts and is in an anti-static bag. If you know anything about Western Digital you know that their “Blue” series of drives are their consumer-based drives and not a performance drive.

Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue 256GB

For all the variety of solid-state drives on the market, and the continual releases of new drives, one would think there would already be a plethora of controllers to choose from. Unfortunately that is not quite the case, as if you pick just about any one SSD it is likely to be using a JMicron, Toshiba, Intel, Indilinx, or Samsung controller inside. Even with the ongoing introduction of new Sandforce controllers found in drives like the Vertex 2, Agility 2, or Corsair Force series, and the recent introduction of a highly customized Marvell controller in the Micron/Crucial RealSSD drives, we are up to seven brands of controllers. Seven brands of controllers to range across several hundred makes and models of SSDs currently on the market. When it comes to the selection of SSDs, one thing should become apparent. For all the dozens upon dozens of brands, rebadges, and controllers available, when it comes to selecting an SSD there haven't been any options available from any of the major drive manufacturers to choose from, with the potential exception of Samsung. Western Digital is changing that with the release of its mainstream SiliconEdge Blue series SSD that is already available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities.

Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue 256GB review

For such a big noise in storage, Western Digital is awfully late to the SSD game. It's enough to make you suspect WD has been in a sulk for the past year or two. Only now is it reluctantly facing up to the undeniable fact that solid state is clearly the future. The millions, perhaps even billions, of dollars it has buried in the development of spinning magnetic platters are soon to be as nought. But no matter. We're much more interested in the performance, reliability and value proposition of WD's first solid state drive launch than its timing or emotional disposition. Enter, therefore, the new SiliconEdge Blue 256GB. In WD's new colour coded nomenclature Green drives are tuned for energy efficiency, Blue are mainstream items and Black indicates ninjascopic performance. Solid control? The context here is SSDs, of course, so don't go thinking this drive's mainstream status translates into affordability. Frankly, prices for the SiliconEdge Blue are all over the e-shop. But as we go to press the lowest is £415. Hardly affordable, then, but certainly competitive with other 256GB SSDs. Intriguingly, WD says compatibility and reliability rather than speed are the focus for this drive. That's something we're perfectly happy to hear.
