Western Digital My Passport Studio (2TB)

With 2 terabytes of capacity, the Western Digital My Passport Studio ($299.99 list) is the most capacious portable hard drive that we've seen thus far. So it's unsurprising that, above everything else, its enormity has garnered most of the attention. This makes sense, because it's arguably the only external drive - portable or otherwise - that most users will need for a very, very long time. In terms of functionality and design, it's scarcely distinguishable from its predecessor, the Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB) ($179.99 list, 4 stars), which is a good and bad thing. Let's start with the good first. All the benefits of its previous iteration are here, so you get a compact, attractive drive that's formatted for your Mac. Moreover, it's an impressive feat of engineering to double the capacity of an already spacious portable drive without adding any noticeable heft to its physical dimensions. Aside from a larger capacity and, not coincidentally, a higher price tag, there's barely any daylight between the two drives. Which leads us to the bad side of the equation: Was there really no room for any additional connectivity options whatsoever?

Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB)

The Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB) is a speedy, portable hard drive for the Mac power user. It comes with FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces, which give you maximum flexibility on a Mac desktop or MacBook Pro laptop. It offers nice dollar-per-gigabyte value, and at $179.99 (list) it's a heck of a lot less expensive than any of the few Thunderbolt drives on the market right now. If you're a Mac-using photographer or videographer, or you simply need to store a lot of data often, the My Passport Studio is a fine choice. Though it may not initially look like it, the My Passport Studio is all aluminum. The majority of the drive enclosure is black anodized aluminum, with a ring of natural-colored metal on the periphery. It specifically matches the aluminum-and-black look of the latest MacBook laptops and Mac desktops. The enclosure is slightly curved where you would expect right angles, such as the corners and even along the edges. This contrasts with the Iomega Helium Portable Hard Drive (1TB) ($199.99 list, 3 stars), which looks and feels like a hard-edged aluminum brick; the My Passport Studio feels better in the hand thanks to these curves.

Western Digital My Passport Studio 1TB review

The Western Digital My Passport Studio 1TB is a pocket-sized portable hard drive and is well designed and robust. Eschewing Western Digital's book-shaped plastic casing, the latest My Passport Studio drive is all metal, with a brushed aluminium chassis and matt black lid. It looks fantastic and doesn't pick up fingerprints. The version we're reviewing here is 1TB in capacity, and offers both FireWire 800 and USB connectivity. Like all FireWire 800 drives it can also be connected to a FW400 port, but you have to supply your own lead or adapter. Perhaps surprisingly, USB connectivity is through Micro-B USB, a standard that's becoming de rigueur for mobile phones, but is less common on hard drives. A couple of applications are bundled. WD Drive Utilities lets you run diagnostics on the drive, set a sleep timer, wipe it clean and register your purchase. With WD Security, you can password-protect your data to keep it from prying eyes. Unlike the 7200rpm Iomega eGo, the My Passport Studio 1TB uses a slower 5400rpm hard drive. This is reflected in our benchmarking tests' random average read/write speeds. Using a FireWire 800 connection, the Western Digital drive gave us 7.905/14.822MB/s, and with USB, 7.623/12.365MB/s.

WD My Passport Studio

The previous model of the My Passport Studio, which was released more than a year ago, made one of the most versatile portable storage solutions of its time. Because of the current popularity of USB 3.0, the new yet still FireWire- and USB 2.0-only My Passport Studio is now rather limited in terms of connections. The drive, however, still manages to remain original by coming in a sturdy and scratch-resistant all-metal casing that's also very good-looking. Most importantly, it offers very good performance. Preformatted for Mac and costing $180 for 1TB (or $160 and $130 for the 750GB and 500GB versions, respectively), the new My Passport Studio is comparatively expensive and suited mostly for Mac users. With a nice design and large amount of storage, it will likely offer power users who travel frequently what they need. Windows users, however, should check out other drives such as the Seagate GoFlex Turbo or the Hitachi Touro for both the faster USB 3.0 connection and better prices. The new My Passport Studio looks great. The drive's housing is made entirely of metal in two colors: black on top, and the rest in white. On the top side, the drive has two FireWire 800 ports and one USB 2.0 port.

Western Digital My Passport 640GB review

With so many portable hard drives to choose from it's not easy for a new release to stand out from the crowd, but Western Digital's My Passport Studio 640GB succeeds admirably with an interesting feature that's more than just a gimmick. The new drive, which is preformatted for Mac and also available in 320 and 500GB capacities, features a small display screen based on e-ink technology. You can customise it with your own 12-character label, and a graphic shows how much free space is available. Because it uses e-ink, it remains on even when your drive isn't powered. The label is edited using WD's SmartWare drive management app, which also lets you password protect the drive using 256-bit encryption and back up your files. It's easy to use, and accessible through a menu bar icon. A turbo driver for faster copying is also included. Connectiviy is through USB 2.0 and FireWire 800, with a bundled cable for a FireWire 400 port. The drive label is an excellent idea, making great use of e-ink technology. The capacity gauge is handy too, but it disappears if you use the drive on a computer that hasn't got SmartWare installed, limiting its usefulness on a portable device. Also, the drive uses the emerging but currently uncommon Micro USB standard, which could prove inconvenient if you haven't got the bundled lead with you.

Western Digital My Passport Studio

Add the support for the new USB 3.0 standard and the all new Digital My Passport Studio would make the most versatile pocket-size external hard drive on the market. Instead, it only offers FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and USB 2.0 connections. Still, it's a handy portable drive that offers up to 640GB of storage and a cool electronic label that works even when the drive is unplugged. The drive performed well with USB 2.0, but its FireWire connections' speeds were much slower than we expected, at least with Windows. Nonetheless, if you need a sleek-looking portable external hard drive for around $200, the 640GB My Passport Studio makes a decent investment. The drive also comes in smaller capacities, 500GB and 320GB, which cost around $180 and $150, respectively. Design and features The new My Passport Studio, which is not to be confused with the old version of the same name, probably is the most full-featured portable external hard drive that Western Digital has ever offered. First off, the drive comes with a really cool customizable electric label that shows text even if the drive isn't plugged in.
