Western Digital My Passport 1 TB (USB 3.0) Review

After testing the 2 TB Western Digital My Passport USB 3.0 portable external hard drive, we thought we'd take a look at the 1 TB model. Note that this HDD is also available with 500 GB and 750 GB of storage space. The 1 TB model obviously has the same scratch-resistant casing as the 2 TB drive. This doesn't pick up greasy fingerprints either. The My Passport is available in black, white, red, blue and grey, but not all capacities are available in all colours. Only the black model is available in all sizes, from 500 GB to 2 TB. The red, blue and grey versions range from 500 GB to 1 TB, and the white one is only available with 500 GB of memory. This My Passport portable external hard drive has a USB 3.0 connection (backwards compatible with USB 2.0), which means Western Digital is promising data transfer speeds three times faster than with USB 2.0 models. Time to put that to the test! The 1 TB My Passport isn't the most compact external hard drive either, measuring 111 x 19 x 82 mm (approx. 170 cm3, when the slimmest models, like the LaCie Rikiki, push down under 110 cm3).

Western Digital My Passport

Portable hard drives typically distinguish themselves in one of two ways: speed or capacity. With its brisk USB 3.0 interface and enormous space, the Western Digital My Passport (2TB) ($249.99 direct) approaches this proverbial fork in the road and takes both paths. It's huge and quick, which is really what most users look for in a portable drive. But that's about all it has going for it - it doesn't quite shake things up. That said, the My Passport (2TB) is nonetheless a fine drive that, thanks to its huge capacity, will undoubtedly leave its users satisfied for a very, very long time. Measuring .82 by 3.24 by 4.37 inches (HWD), the My Passport (2TB) is, true to its name, roughly the size of a passport. Assuming you haven't traveled to every single country on the planet, it's a bit thicker than an average passport. At a scant .49 pound, you can easily toss it into your bag or chinos without adding any noticeable heft. The My Passport (2TB) takes most of its design cues from the Western Digital My Passport Studio (2TB) ($299.99 list, 4 stars), feeling appreciably sturdy in my hand thanks to its compact size and smooth rounded edges, though the latter's anodized aluminum chassis accounts for a slightly heavier and overall more attractive final product. This isn't to say that the My Passport (2TB) is an eyesore— far from it. Its plastic chassis sports a pleasing smooth matte finish on its edges and underside that contrast nicely with the dotted pattern that adorns the lid.

External Drive Reviews: HDDs & SSDs

Western Digital is the first manufacturer to sell a 2.5-inch external hard drive with a 2 TB storage capacity. Note, however, that this My Passport external HDD is also available in 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB versions. The drive has a tough casing that's resistant to scratches and which doesn't pick up fingerprints. It comes in a choice of black, white, red, blue and grey, although not all storage capacities are available in all colours. In fact, only the black version is available from 500 GB through to 2 TB, while the red, blue and grey models are available from 500 GB to 1 TB and the white drive is only sold with 1 TB of memory. All drives in the range come with the Super Speed USB 3.0 interface (backwards-compatible with USB 2.0) for data transfer speeds that promise to be three times higher than with standard USB 2.0 HDDs. Let's put that to the test. And it's true that this external hard drive has excellent data transfer speeds. In fact, they're more than three times higher than those typically seen over a USB 2.0 interface. This latest Western Digital hard drive manages a read speed of 122 MBps compared with around 35 MBps for USB 2.0 models.
