3TB Western Digital Caviar Green Review

It’s been nearly two years since we saw the first 2TB drives hit the market. You’d think we would have gotten 3TB drives months ago. It’s not that hard, is it? Turns out, it’s pretty complicated. We’ll get into all that in a second, but in the meantime, here’s what you need to know: Western Digital’s new 3TB Caviar Green drive is the first internal bootable 3TB drive to hit the market. It’s not the first 3TB drive—Western Digital and Seagate both have external versions—but it is the first bootable 3TB drive. So, why are we only now seeing bootable 3TB drives? Because most computers are running on kludged-together legacy systems, that’s why! Hard drives have historically been divided into 512-bit sectors. Your drive’s master boot record, which tells the BIOS where everything is on a given drive, is 32-bit, so it can only address a number of sectors equal to one 32-bit integer’s worth. Two to the 32nd power is 4,294,967,296; multiply that by 512 bytes and you get 2.19TB, which is how big a partition can be before the MBR runs out of room to figure out where everything is.

Western Digital 3TB Caviar Green Drive

I have a confession to make, I’m a pack rat. There, I’ve said it. I can’t seem to get rid of my old stuff. I keep finding new ways to re-purpose it. The same goes for the stuff on my hard drive. I just keep using up more space. With more people ripping blu-ray movies to their computer, the problem becomes compounded. A full quality 1080p movie can take up around 8GB. Backing up your movie collection can quickly burn through hard drive space. Fortunately for yours and my data hoarding needs Western Digital has released their new 3TB Green Drive. We reviewed their iteration a while ago, can this newcomer live up to its predecessor? Read on to find out. As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. On the surface, the new 3TB iteration of the Western Digital Green Drive series looks the same as the other drives in the series. Under the hood we have double the cache (up to 64MB from 32MB) of prior versions and the largest platter density around.

WD Caviar Green (3TB)

What are technological limitations when you have history to make? That must have been Western Digital's controlling thought process when conceiving its latest Caviar Green drive. This 3-Gbps SATA model, priced at $239 (list), has a full 3 terabytes (TB) of storage space, which makes it the largest-capacity 3.5-inch internal hard drive you can buy. The bad news is that almost no one will be able to use this kind of high-capacity drive without making some adjustments to their system. Windows XP users won't be able to use it at all, and those who do get it working will find it's not exactly a speed demon. But if all you need is basic storage - and a lot of it - the 3TB Caviar Green delivers. To be fair, the drive's compatibility problems are due to its capacity rather than any technical failings on WD's part. Back when hard drive capacity was measured in mere megabytes, a block size of 512 bytes made sense as a way of maximizing available space. But as drives got bigger and performance started straining, roundabout the late 1990s, the 512-byte block size became more restrictive.

Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB SATA 3Gb/s review

The headline-grabbing capacity of three whole terebytes is what really makes this Western Digital Caviar Green HDD stand out, but is there anything more to it than sheer size? With the focus squarely on the burgeoning SSD market it would be all too easy to overlook spinning platter drives. They're not as fast, not as talked about and not as exciting as their solid state brethren. Ignoring them completely would be foolish though, as in most cases you'll need a large hard drive to go alongside your sprightly, but slim, SSD. Plus, traditional hard drives can still offer a surprising amount of performance for your cash too. And as far as cash is concerned, traditional hard drives are still in a completely different league to their newer siblings – thanks to the enormous capacities that are available. Western Digital lays claim to a number of technologies that are driving platter-based mechanisms forward, culminating in this whopping 3TB drive. That's three terabytes in a single drive. This huge capacity doesn't come without problems of its own (more on this in a second), but it isn't the only piece of cunning technology at work to make the WD30EZRS an interesting proposition. For instance, alongside the hefty capacity, you'll find a tasty 64MB buffer, for improved performance across the board.

WD Caviar Green 3TB Hard Drive Review

While solid state drives get faster, mechanical hard drives get larger. Not long ago, we celebrated the first 1TB hard drive, and since then, welcomed 1.5TB and eventually 2TB drives to the consumer market. Yes, the performance increase that SSD's offer is more than impressive. However, they still can't touch the capacity that traditional hard drives provide tech-savvy, budget conscious consumers and system builders. When it comes to cost per gigabyte analysis, hard drives possess a huge advantage over SSD's. Today, Western Digital announces the world's highest density hard drive, as they reach the 3TB mark with their newest, 5th generation Caviar Green product. To go along with its massive storage capacity, the Caviar Green 3TB serves up a super-sized combination of reduced power consumption, lower operating temperature, and a quieter working environment. Read on to find out how well it performs and if it deserves to be on your upgrade list. While the specs are straightforward, there are a couple of points worth mentioning. First, Western Digital is announcing two Caviar Green drives today. Along with the 3TB drive we're reviewing, there's also a 2.5TB model with the model number WD25EZRSDTL, selling for $189.
