Reviews: Internal Hard Drives

For several years at WD, when you're not fighting off the VelociRaptors or Scorpions - the laptop range - you're stuffing your face with Caviar. And there's Caviar for all tastes: green for energy economy and silence, blue for allround usage and black for no-concession performance. And it's a black we're looking at today: the WD2001FASS also called Caviar Black 2 TB. Behind this name lies an SATA-2 interface at 3 Gbps and 64 MB of cache memory. Note that the Caviar Black is also available as an SATA-3 6Gbps but only in 640 GB and 1 TB versions at the moment. The SATA-3 versions have a "2" in their name whiel the SATA-2s have a "1". Go figure! Among the SATA-2 versions, only the 2 TB has 64 MB of cache. The others have just 32 MB (see inset). The platter turns at 7200 rpm, which should guarantee decent access times. Once again, remember that the rating here, in contrast to the overall rating, takes into account all drives tested, including SSD performance. Because in spite of its two stars, the Caviar Black 2 TB is no slouch: Among other qualities it offers the best current speeds for writing large files.

Western Digital Caviar Black and RE4 2TB Drives Review

It happens to all of us at some point. We constantly run short of hard drive space, no matter how incredibly cavernous you thought your current drive was when you bought it. Did you really expect Dragon Age: Origins and Borderlands to soak up almost thirty gigabytes between them? Didn't think so. You either shove Office 2007 and Photoshop CS aside to make some room for your latest losslessly-ripped music and RAW photos, or grab a drive that offers up more capacity, say up to 2TB--such as the ones we're going to be evaluating here. You know the contenders. These aren't solid state drives full of a speedy but thimble-sized flash memory chips--these are large, succulent drives with platters humming at 7200rpm and they're made by Western Digital. Taken to task today we have three drives in total: the Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB which we'll use as a reference point, and two relatively new offerings from WD: The RE4 2TB drive and the Caviar Black 2TB. Which of the three drives outperformed the others? There was a clear winner, and that particular drive is an absolute speed demon.

Western Digital's Caviar Black 2TB hard drive

The progression of the mechanical hard drive market is fueled not by ever-increasing spindle speeds, but by the availability of higher-density platters. Cramming more bytes onto each physical disk obviously enables greater storage capacities. At the same time, it also facilitates improved performance by allowing the drive head to access more data over shorter physical distances. Conveniently, at least for comparative purposes, drive makers have settled on similar per-platter capacities over the last few generations. Sure, actual areal densities have varied a little, and each manufacturer has moved up the platter ladder at its own pace, but they've largely hit the same rungs. For example, Seagate and Western Digital both had drives with 125, 188, and 250GB platters. They went their separate ways through the 300s, with WD offering 320 and then 334GB while Seagate jumped all the way up to 375GB. However, it looks like the two are in agreement on the next battleground: 500GB. Western Digital was the first to squeeze 500GB onto a single disk with the Caviar Green 2TB. Of course, the Green is one of those hippie low-power drives that's most comfortable sitting quietly in the corner, its reflexes hindered by a slower spindle speed and probably more than a few bong hits.
