External Drive Reviews: HDDs & SSDs

The StoreJet 25A3 1 TB USB 3.0 hard drive from Transcend has an unusual design but doesn't cut corners on protecting your data. According to the manufacturer, the new hard drive offers an impressive level of protection. We didn't take it apart, but it seems rigid enough. After a few tumbles, neither the case nor the disk itself showed any sign of weakness. But the speeds are what we're really interested in ... This USB 3.0 drive is as fast as today's current top performers like the LaCie Rugged eSATA or the Rugged USB 3.0 when working with large files. It gets close to 110 MB/s for reading and 103 MB/s for writing, which is excellent. It's a little slower than those two when working with smaller files, though. LaCie might have managed to produce faster transfer rates for smaller files, but Transcend has done a better job of making the drive itself easy to transport. It occupies around 163 cm³, much less space than the 360 cm³ taken up by the LaCie Rugged devices. It weighs just 187 g, less than the 270 g of its competitors.
