Toshiba Tecra A11 review

Toshiba's Tecra A11-11H is quite an expensive laptop, so we were expecting great things. We certainly weren't left disappointed, with plenty of highlights to speak of, although this isn't quite a perfect machine. The Intel Core i5 520M processor provided an excellent benchmarking score, so anyone demanding plenty of power need look no further. Multitaskers can browse the web, enjoy their music and movies, and run intensive applications all at the same time, with no noticeable slowdown in evidence. The Tecra A11 also features Intel GMA HD integrated graphics, which is best suited to basic multimedia tasks such as browsing photos and watching movies. That's certainly all you'll manage with the Toshiba, and anyone who wants to play the latest games or edit their media will need a machine fitted with dedicated graphics instead. BenchmarksBattery life: 269 minutesMobileMark 2007: 2423DMark 2003: 3281The 269 minutes on offer here is a good result and anyone who regularly travels should definitely consider the Toshiba, although the 2.6kg weight and bulky chassis unfortunately reduce portability.

Toshiba Tecra A11-S3540

Not all business users need to travel with their notebooks. Maybe you want a powerful laptop at your desk with a fairly large screen and prefer to use a netbook, iPad, or smart phone on the road instead. And maybe you want that primary PC to offer screaming performance—without breaking the bank. Enter Toshiba’s Tecra A11, which combines a superfast Core i7 processor with discrete Nvidia graphics for a reasonable price. While this 15.6-inch system is somewhat plain to look at, it also boasts security and IT features that will protect your investment and your data. Just be sure to keep an outlet close. Editors’ Note: While the A11 comes preinstalled with Windows XP Professional, Toshiba packages Windows 7 Professional with the system, which we installed prior to running our benchmark tests. Also, portions of this review were taken from our earlier review of the Toshiba Tecra A11 (S3510).The A11’s matte black lid is dimpled with a handsome pattern that doesn’t show fingerprints, and it continues on the deck; the bezel is also a matte black plastic, but lacks the fancy design. Overall, this a very understated look that will no doubt appeal to business users, but it lacks the panache of the HP ProBook series, which has a more elegant brushed aluminum lid.

Toshiba Tecra A11-S3540 Review

Toshiba's Tecra Series of laptops have traditionally been marketed as high-performance business laptops, designed to be capable of handling demanding tasks. Earlier this year, Toshiba announced the Tecra A11. The new Tecra A11 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor and features a 10-key numeric keypad. Designed as a desktop replacement, the Tecra A11 offers the new 2010 Intel Core processor family and a high-resolution widescreen 15.6-inch display. Some models also offer NVIDIA NVS 2100M graphics. Because the Tecra Series targets business users, Toshiba has included additional security features such as a fingerprint reader with the A11. Toshiba's Tecra line also offers EasyGuard Technology which provides for added protection from shocks and spills and enhanced data security. As part of the EasyGuard Technology, Toshiba has gone to great lengths to help protect the system by including a more durable display, a keyboard that helps guard against damages from spills, and advanced encryption technologies. Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division talks about what the Tecra A11 has to offer: "Our customers are looking for slimmer and lighter designs for portability, textured finishes for durability, and the latest technologies for full-featured performance.” We had the top-of-the-line Tecra A11-S3540 in house for testing.

Toshiba Tecra A11

Small business owners and entrepreneurs need to scrimp and save any way they can, which is why systems such as the Toshiba Tecra A11 represent a real deal. For $879, users get a fairly powerful system, a large 15.6-inch display, and security and IT features that would otherwise be too costly for a start-up. But is this the best bargain for penny pinchers? Editors’ Note:While the A11 comes preinstalled with Windows XP Professional, Toshiba packages Windows 7 Professional with the system, which we installed prior to running our benchmark tests.Although business notebooks aren’t known for their flair, more consideration is given now to their looks. The A11’s matte black lid is dimpled with a stylish pattern that doesn’t show fingerprints, and it continues on the deck; the bezel is also a matte black plastic, but lacks the design. Overall, it’s a very understated look that will no doubt appeal to business users, but it lacks the full panache of the HP ProBook series, which has a more elegant brushed aluminum lid. Above the keyboard are buttons for launching Toshiba’s Eco Utility, outputting the screen to a projector or larger display, and volume controls.
