Looking over the specs for the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5130 ($398 list, at Wal-Mart), it would be easy to mistake it for a netbook. The single-core processor, 250GB hard drive, and short list of features are standard for that class of mobile PCs, but underwhelming for a laptop. This laptop is clearly made to sell on its price tag alone, but you might want to consider a netbook in the same price range. My favorite aspect of this laptop is its design: Instead of colors pulled from a pack of Skittles, Toshiba used a basic black. Instead of the pearly-metallic finish found on the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4025 ($498 list, 3 stars), they opted for a basic matte finish and texturing that covers the entire surface. Measuring 1.5 by 9.84 by 15.0 inches (HWD), the Satellite C655D-S5130 weighs five pounds, which is fairly average for a mainstream laptop. Throw in the AC adapter and the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5130 totals 5.74 pounds, heavier than the Toshiba L645D-S4025 (4.6 pounds), but lighter than the Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ ($629.99 list, 4.5 stars), which weighed six pounds with the AC adapter. The keyboard doesn't have the island-style keys of a chiclet keyboard, but creates a similar feel with specially molded keys.
There's a common conception in laptop purchasing that the best values to be had on the bottom end tend to lie in the "doorbuster" 15-incher. We've seen these laptops advertised during holiday shopping seasons and in store circulars--they're big, cheap, and they usually feature severely underpowered processors. The Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5130 is notable because the processor it carries is one of the new AMD Fusion APUs (AMD's term for a combo CPU/GPU), a platform we've previously only seen on 11.6-inch ultraportables such as the HP Pavilion dm1 and the Lenovo ThinkPad x120e. The C-series is Toshiba's ultrabudget line, a generic black-box-type laptop with sometimes-decent specs. Priced at $398, the C655D-S5130 seems at first glance like an intriguing new bargain. And yet it isn't: that AMD processor isn't an E-350 like we saw on those 11-inchers; instead, it's a lower-powered E-240. We reviewed the Toshiba Satellite C655-S5049 in last year's summer retail round-up of laptops, toting a Celeron 900 CPU for only $349. That configuration had 1GB less RAM than this AMD Fusion variant, but it outperformed the C655D-S5130 in our benchmark tests, despite being less expensive over half a year ago.
For the last few years, the sub-$400 notebook realm has mostly been the exclusive province of netbooks. Budget mainstream notebooks sometimes dip below the $500 mark, but it's usually a clearance item or a Black Friday deal. So the 15-inch Toshiba Satellite C655D may shock a few consumers when they see it with a $398 price tag at Walmart (where it's being sold exclusively). This machine offers a basic design, an AMD Fusion processor that promises slightly better performance than a netbook, and long battery life. Was Toshiba able to bring the mainstream budget price range down without sacrificing too much? Read on.Weighing in at 5 pounds, the Satellite C655D is pretty light for a 15-incher. The matte black lid and deck have a dimpled texture that gives the notebook a nice grip. Above the keyboard are two oval speaker grilles, which are also plastic, but have a nice glossy trim. We're fans of the simple all-black color scheme, which isn't marred by many ostentatious LEDs (though there are two that indicate when the Number and Caps Lock is on).During testing, the Satellite C655D notebook remained pretty cool.
