It's tough to compete against the elite, even for a laptop. Most desktop replacements are overshadowed by performance-driven laptops, like the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4 stars) and Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) ($1,785 direct, 4 stars), that give you premium design, features, and parts, but for a hefty price. The Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176 ($800 street) can't compete with these laptops in terms of raw processing and graphics power, but it manages to snag some attention thanks to a new Intel second-generation processor, Blu-ray drive, Harman/Kardon speakers that deliver premium sound, and a price tag that the elite systems can't match. The A665-S5176 has a charcoal grey plastic chassis with Toshiba's Fusion X2 finish, which features a two-color pattern that ripples through the plastic construction. Texturing across the lid and palm rest wards off smudges and adds a unique visual element. This textured pattern stops short of covering the entire laptop, and the edges of the lid and palm rest have a glossy finish instead. This finish does little to hide unsightly fingerprints, yet Toshiba places these glossy surfaces where the laptop will be touched the most.
Toshiba recently released a refresh of the popular Satellite A665 notebook with the latest Intel Sandy Bridge processors and graphics. Is the new A665 a worthwhile upgrade to last year's laptop? Keep reading to find out. Build and DesignI have something of a mixed opinion about the design of the new Satellite A660/A665 notebook. Since it's a "refresh" of the existing Satellite A660/A665 series the new A665-S5176 looks virtually identical to the A665 model we reviewed last year. The only significant changes worth mentioning are the use of a new Intel "Sandy Bridge" processor with improved Intel integrated graphics and a few subtle changes to the ports on the side of the notebook. The design of the A665 remains quite traditional with sculpted edges, a mixture of smooth and textured glossy plastics, and some attractive LED accent lighting. Although the design isn't particularly exciting, keeping essentially the same design makes production easier and cheaper for Toshiba ... meaning Toshiba can pass those cost savings to you. The exterior of the A665 is covered in what Toshiba calls the "Fusion X2 Finish in Charcoal."
Built to tackle everyday computing tasks, Toshiba's new Satellite A665-S5176X knows how to have fun, too. This 15-inch laptop plays Blu-ray movies, upconverts DVDs to HD for enhanced viewing, and packs in great-sounding speakers for an affordable $799. But do the rest of this notebook's features hold up to other multimedia machines on the market?Physically, the Toshiba Satellite A665 is virtually identical to the Satellite A665-S6058 model we reviewed last year. The laptop's jet-black plastic chassis is rectangular with smooth, rounded edges. Sturdy and solid, the lid and deck also sport a textured, fingerprint-resistant pattern reminiscent of a miniature chain link. Contrasting with the dark interior are brilliant white status lights, framed by two muscular speakers sitting above the island-style keyboard. There's an illuminated stripe highlighting the touchpad, plus a backlit Satellite logo on the system's left bottom lip.Measuring 15 x 10 x 1.5 inches and weighing 5.6 pounds, 15.6-inch Satellite A665-S5176X is on the hefty side. Primarily meant to be transported from room to room in the home, the notebook can be squeezed into standard messenger bags with a little effort, though a bigger backpack is more practical.
