    Toshiba NB305

The Mini NB305 is one of Toshiba's newest models and with a retail price of US $449, it is priced competitively with other netbooks we've tested. However, the Toshiba stands apart from other netbooks because of its stellar looks and overall finish. The NB305's contrasting mocha brown lid and silver/gray keyboard give it a premium look and in hand, the Toshiba just feels solidly built. There's minimal flex when you hold the machine from one of its edges, the LCD's hinges feel solid and offer decent resistance and both keyboard and trackpad are a pleasure to use. The 10.1-inch widescreen LCD is fairly up-market in that it is bright, features excellent vibrancy and colours and sports a glossy finish. Performance-wise the Toshiba proved something of an underachiever; it returned PCMark 2005 CPU, memory and hard drive scores of 1489, 2539 and 4484. These figures were slightly lower than the numbers produced by other similarly configured, and priced, netbooks. The startup and shutdown times of 45- and 15-seconds were also rather sluggish. Within Windows 7 the netbook struggled along at times and this is because it only has 1GB of RAM. As a result we noticed plenty of hard disk activity once the available memory was used.

The Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 is a basic netbook that's pretty solid, with decent specs: a 250GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Starter Edition; however, it is priced a bit higher than similarly configured netbooks. It achieved a performance score of 32 on WorldBench 6--a bit on the slow side, even for a netbook. Our review unit, priced at $399 (as of 3/29/10), features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor (with an integrated Intel GPU), 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Starter Edition. It also has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (but no Bluetooth), a built-in microphone and Webcam, and a one-year limited warranty. The system we reviewed is blue, but this model also comes in brown and white. The NB305-N410 weighs 2.9 pounds (with the battery), and measures 10.5 inches wide by 7.6 inches tall by 1.4 inches thick, with a 10.1-inch widescreen display. That's not terribly heavy by netbook standards, but it was still a little more than I like. However, part of that weight is the battery, which Toshiba claims will give you 11 hours of use (it lasted about 9 hours in PCWorld's tests). The NB305-N410 isn't the most attractive of netbooks (for sexy, see the Sony Vaio X Series), but it is sturdily built and looks professional despite the color choices. This Mini features a shiny, textured lid and a silver interior finish.

    Toshiba Mini NB305-N410BN

The world of cheap, ubiquitous, and nearly identical Netbooks has been a stable and predictable landscape for a while now, and hasn't gotten any less predictable with the launch of Intel's next generation of Atom processors. Whereas Netbooks used to run Windows XP, have N270 processors, and 1GB RAM/160GB hard drive as standards, now Netbooks run Windows 7 Starter, have N450 processors, and have 1GB RAM/250GB hard-drive configurations, with occasional variations. Those variations--extra RAM, better resolution or larger screens, larger batteries, and keyboard designs--define how much any Netbook is worth. The Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 is, by most standards, an average Netbook in terms of base features. At $399, it's affordable, but still $100 more than some budget models out there. On the other hand, the advantages when compared against the previous Toshiba Mini NB205 model we reviewed last December are considerable. For the same price, the Mini NB305-N410 has much-improved battery life, thanks to its new N450 Atom processor, plus the battery bulge we always hated about the NB series has been nearly eliminated.

    Toshiba mini NB305-N410

Like other notebook manufacturers, Toshiba has updated its netbook to incorporate Intel’s new Pine Trail CPU, the Atom N450. In doing so, it also refreshed the design of its stylish netbook, now called the mini NB305, making the chassis sleeker and more refined. While this $399 netbook still has everything we loved about the previous versions—such as its excellent keyboard, touchpad, and price—it’s no longer the endurance champion it once was. Toshiba trimmed down its netbook where it could: instead of the frame being uniform in thickness, as on the NB205, it tapers from 1.4 inches in the rear to approximately 0.5 inches in front, resulting in a very svelte look. The front edge is also more beveled, so the system looks more rounded than before. The new screen bezel sports tapered edges; while it’s the same thickness as on the NB205, it doesn’t look as clunky. The major aesthetic change from the NB205 and the NB305 is the battery. The former battery jutted out from the rear, but now it’s tucked in underneath, trimming nearly an inch off the system (although the weight remains constant, at 2.8 pounds).
