Toshiba NB200-10p - DISSECTED :D As I could not find any info on how to open up the NB200, I had to make my own way in, and it took quite some time to get there. I thought it would be nice to film the assembly, and describe the disassembly step by step, so some of you netbook modders could have it more easy ;) Didn't have the camera for the disassembling, so here's the assembly video. If you're taking it apart, just do the opposite procedure ;) I'll describe the whole process step by step, as it's not all that simple. It's the most complicated netbook I've seen ;) First of course unplug it from the mains, and remove the battery. Put it bottom side up, and then unscrew and remove the memory bay hatch. Then do the HDD hatch, for which you will need a Torx T7 bit. You wont get any further then this if you don't have a T7 bit. Then unscrew the two Torx screws, and remove the hatch. It will give you access to the HDD and both miniPCI modules. On mine there is only the WiFi in place, and the second one doesn't have the miniPCI connector soldered ;-( So no easy mods for me ;) If You are lucky to have the second miniPCI connector, you could just buy the 3Gmodem (or whatever you would like to install) and just plug it in and rig up the antenna. or just ditch the WiFi and replace it with 3G. Well, that's the EASY way. Here's the hard way continued ;) After you remove the HDD (just slide it out of the SATA connector, and pull out holding it to the sides) unscrew 7 screws marked as ...

Here is my unboxing of my Toshiba netbook nb-200, sorry for the quality, the vid was taken with my cell phone and again, I had just got up in the middle of the day *middle of the night for us night shifters* to pick it up at the postal depot, after a 60hr work week. The price from Toshiba was $530.88CAD after tax and enviro levy here in Canada. Though I hear the price just dropped a bit. It is called a dynabook ux in Japan not a dynasty ux like I said in the video. Yes the sleep on charge does work when the laptop is off and not plugged in. Windows seven doesn't have the proper drivers for the touch pad so I have no scrolling features as of yet. *update* the XP drivers seem to work for the touchpad. I would recommend sticking with the win7 video drivers though. Could use better speakers, but as with the NB-100, I just use a headset anyway.

After hearing some great tones on YouTube I downloaded the Guitar Rig 4 Demo. Totally amazing presets! This video uses the 80s Solo preset and Im using my Guitar Port hardware for sampling. (There is a great Whitesnake riff at 5:30 for ya) I must say, I wasn't all that impressed with previous versions of Guitar Rig, but this new version rocks! The AC/DC tones are amazing. The Van Halen tones are so close to the original. Plus, the processor usage is minimal. Its only about 50% on my little Toshiba NB200. The Foo Fighers presets are a great rock sound. But, im not sure the Steve Vai tones are as close as they could be. The metal sounds are lacking a little too imho, but Im sure you can make up better ones. To my ears, the factory presets are a little dull, but that can be fixed with a little treble boost on the amps. I tried some of my own settings and I found a lot of very cool sounds that I'd be happy to play with. That said, I have the Peavey Revalver MkIII & Line6 GuitarPort installed as well as a bunch of freebie emulators and they all sound great. Guitar Rig is worth a play. After playing with these emulators for some time, I think what is missing is that element of unpredictability. Ie: The sound is too perfect. A real tube amp doesnt perform as evenly as these emulators. You get bung notes and variable levels of distortion depending on where you play on the neck. Plus I miss feedback. But, considering you can get a Beringer USB Guitar Link for $90 (AU) and download ...

This is Snow Leopard running on a Toshiba NB200. The guide used was www.hackint0sh.org and the USB drive to install from was a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16GB. Just need to receive my replacement WiFi card (Dell's 1397), because the built-in one does not work with OS X.
