Last month, we did a review on the Thermaltake Max5G USB 3.0 enclosure. We were unable to properly assess the performance of the enclosure because of a malfunction of the USB 3.0 controller on the Rampage III Gene motherboard. In order to adequately assess the performance of Thermaltake Max5G USB 3.0 enclosure several parameters were tested. General benchmarks for the transfer rate were used to test the Renesas chip within the enclosure. Note that since every USB 3.0 enclosure is compatible with both USB 2.0 and 3.0 hubs, both ports were tested in order to compare the difference in performance for both. In addition to basic transfer rate tests, cooling features of the enclosure were tested by placing a thermal sensor on the outside of the enclosure, as well as using HD Tune Pro to provide with the readings on the inside of the enclosure. The results were compared to the internal hard drives inside of the In-Win Dragon Rider, a case which is noted for extremely efficient air circulation.
External hard drive enclosures have been around for quite a long time, I can always remember having one around to use as a backup or storage drive. With USB 3.0 becoming pretty much standard on all new motherboards new enclosures like Thermaltake’s Max 5G take advantage of the super fast speeds on USB 3.0. This new enclosure from Thermaltake features a super fast USB 3.0 connection, dual 80mm active cooling LED fans and support for SATA I, II and 6GB/s drives up to 2TB. Let’s take a look... The Max 5G comes in Thermaltake’s retail packaging. On the front there is a photo of the Max 5G and a list of features. On the back the specifications are listed. Opening the box up everything inside is nicely protected. Inside you will find the Max 5G enclosure, USB 3.0 cable, power adapter, hex screwdriver, HDD spacing pads and a installation guide. The Max 5G is made to look attractive whether it is sitting on your desk on on top of your tower. It has an all black design, which is made up of plastic and brushed aluminum. On the front part of the Max 5G is a long blue activity LED.
A couple of months ago, I took a look at Thermaltake's latest spin on its "BlacX" hard drive dock, the 5G. For those who have a multitude of hard drives kicking around and need to manage data on them all, the BlacX proves to be a fantastic offering. Though a bit pricey compared to the competition, the BlacX series has become known for its reliability, and that's the most important factor. Today, I'm taking a look at a similar product, the Max 5G. Unlike the BlacX 5G, which is a dock, the Max 5G is a straight-out enclosure, meant to be used for one drive and one drive only. That makes the target of the product a bit different, as those who purchase a Max 5G will want to be content on using just a single drive, as swapping out for another is not that simple. Thermaltake's Max 5G has a couple of goals. First, it strives to be reliable, and if our BlacX experience is a gauge at all, we could expect the 5G's stability and reliability factors to be top-rate. Second, the product has to look good, which the Max 5G does. It's comprised of plastic and metal, and features differently textured surfaces.
