Hands on: Sony Vaio T13 review (Preview)
Sony announced its debut Intel Ultrabook earlier this month – the Sony Vaio T13 - and we got up close and personal with the new machine at an event in London.You might also likeBest Ultrabook: 16 top thin and lights for 2012Designed to take on the likes of the Dell XPS 13, the HP Folio 13 and, of course, the MacBook Air – the Sony Vaio T Series Ultrabook is aimed, according to its makers at least, at people who want portability and power on the go.Our first impressions of the first Ultrabook-branded Vaio machine were that, despite it not being as sleek as Dell's debutant XPS 13, or as pretty as the Asus Zenbook range, this is a seriously slick machine with a robustness and sharp finish unlike any other Ultrabook we've seen.At 17.8mm, it's certainly not the skinniest Ultrabook model on the catwalk, but its square edges set it apart from its rivals. A MacBook clone it is not.The magnesium and alloy chassis helps to create an industrial and rugged impression for the T13. And this impression isn't misleading – a quick tug at the lid revealed that it's plenty sturdy so should be safe enough in your bag for a day out and about.

Like a surfer waiting for the right wave, Sony sat out the first generation of ultrabooks. But now there are two new waves hitting the shore: ultrabooks with Intel's third-generation Core "Ivy Bridge" processors; and models with more affordable price tags thanks to the use of conventional hard drives plus small flash caches, as pioneered by last year's Acer Aspire S3 ($899.99 direct, 3.5 stars), instead of solid-state drives. So instead of costing $1,000 and giving you 128GB of storage, the Sony VAIO T13 (model: SVT13112FXS) costs $799.99 (direct) with 500GB, while its Intel Core i5-3317U chip gives it performance that matches or beats the first crop of ultrabooks. Battery life is fine, and fit and finish are wonderful - the VAIO T13 looks and feels like an executive-status-symbol laptop costing much more. What's not to like? Well, hard drives are heavier than SSDs; the T13 weighs 3.33 pounds instead of under 3 pounds - although we've seen 13.3-inch ultrabooks ranging from the 2.5 pounds of the Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 ($1,049.99 list, 4 stars) to the 3.25 pounds of the Editors' Choice HP Folio 13-1020us ($899.99 list, 4 stars).
Sony VAIO T13
Long before many other laptop vendors began experimenting with netbooks and ultraportables, Sony was making skinny, lightweight laptops--many with small screens, most of them rather pricey. Its first Ultrabook, the VAIO T13, is neither exceptionally small nor expensive at a starting price of $799 (as of June 4, 2012). With its decided consumer bent (including hybrid storage), it shapes up as a laptop worth considering if you just want to dip your toe in the Ultrabook category and avoid full immersion. Outfitted with a 13.3-inch, 1366-by-768-pixel widescreen display, an Intel Core i5-3317U CPU and its companion HD4000 graphics hardware, 4GB of RAM, and hybrid storage (a 500GB hard drive cached by 32GB of flash storage), the VAIO T13 earned a respectable score of 123 on WorldBench 7, and a mark of 77 in overall performance (including battery life and game performance). That's about what you'd expect from an Ivy Bridge configuration with hybrid storage instead of a full solid-state drive. It's worth mentioning that a couple of laptops with previous-generation Sandy Bridge CPUs and solid-state drives scored better, reflecting the impact on benchmarks from data-transfer speeds between drives and memory (as opposed to raw computing power alone).
Sony VAIO T13 Review
Here's something we were not expecting. Sony is undercutting a lot of its competitors with the price of its first Ultrabook. At just $799, the VAIO T13 sports a sleek aluminum design and a third-generation Intel Core processor. And while you don't get a full-fledged solid state drive, the T13 promises the best of both worlds by combining 500GB of storage and 32GB of flash memory for fast boots and resumes. Is this ultraportable as good a deal as it sounds?Click to EnlargeThe VAIO T13 features what Sony calls a full flat design. No slopes or wedges here, just clean lines. With its silver brushed aluminum lid, chrome VAIO insignia and rear plastic chrome strip, the VAIO T13 is quite the looker. The matching silver interior is just as sleek. We love the subtle groove that leads from the palm rest to the recessed keyboard deck.Buttons for VAIO Assist, Web and PlayMemories sit above the keyboard along with status lights for NUM, CAPS and Scroll Lock and the power button. The engraved VAIO insignia on the palm rest is also a nice flourish that gives the notebook a hint of personality.In terms of dimensions, the 12.7 x 8.9 x 0.7-inch, 3.4-pound T13 is a bit on the heavy side for a 13-inch Ultrabook.
