Silverstone’s latest Raven is the third in the series best known for its rotated- motherboard configuration, which puts the I/O backplane at the top of the chassis. The PSU mounts at the bottom-front of the case, and the entire mobo setup is cooled from below, using two upward-blowing 18cm fans. The Raven tallies some impressive numbers: There’s room for eight PCI slots, four 3.5-inch hard drive mounts, two 2.5-inch bays behind the motherboard tray, and eight 5.25-inch bays. The spacious interior can fit a 12.2-inch GPU with ease. Thanks to four cable-routing cutouts, a cleanly wired build is easy. And the two 18cm filtered intake fans gave the RV03 the best air-cooling temperatures of any case in our roundup, including the premium ones. We’re not sure how we feel about the RV03’s exterior, though. Last year’s Raven RV02 had a similar superhero-themed look, but was all black. This Raven has two gold stripes running up the front of the chassis, which strikes us as a bit tacky. Overall, the Silverstone Raven RV03 is a solid case, and gets points for ingenuity. It may look a little garish and feel a little plasticky, but it’s roomy, features a stunning amount of ports and slots, and offers a crazy-organized build and great cooling.
If you were struck by a mild case of déjà vu after seeing the title of this article, it's probably because you read about the Raven 2 Evolution (RV02-E) only a few months back. The RV02 featured Silverstone's second-generation layout and was a significant improvement on the original RV01, released in late 2008. The Raven series employs an unconventional design that rotates the motherboard and power supply so they are mounted vertically with the I/O panel facing the top of the chassis. Among other benefits, this design makes it much easier to access the system's power, display, USB, Ethernet and other connectors. The other main advantage is improved cooling courtesy of the "stack effect," because top and bottom-mounted fans guide rising heat out of the case. The RV02 executed this unique layout very well directing airflow over the entire motherboard servicing high-end graphics cards with a constant flow of cool air. Between its creative design, high-quality construction and very reasonable price, the Raven 2 Evolution was, and still is one of the best gaming-orientated computer cases available. Although the RV02 is still very relevant, Silverstone recently introduced an even more refined chassis to its Raven product line.
'Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting - 'Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore! Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!' Quoth the raven, 'Nevermore.' While I can't guarantee an Edgar Allan Poe-like experience during the course of this review, I can guarantee an up-close-and-personal look at a raven; the Raven RV03 full-tower case from SilverStone to be precise. Available with or without a window, the Raven 3 picks up where the Raven 2 left off with another unique internal layout that supports micro-ATX, ATX and extended-ATX motherboards. Fans of the Raven series will notice the gradual evolution of the exterior to what it has become today. The newest Raven tries to bring a little bit of refinement and flair to the nest by adding gold accents on each side of the plastic front panel that extend up and over the top, all the way to the back. This is a small but drastic departure from the all black scheme of the previous offerings. At the very top is a frosted V-shaped plastic accent that glows white when the system is powered on.
