The Seagate GoFlex Pro 2.5-inch portable external hard drive is great for use with laptops but not so great for desktop tower cases, as its USB connector cable is a little on the short side (approx. 50 centimetres). Otherwise, Seagate has come up with a pretty nifty way set its drive apart from competitor models, as it boasts interchangeable connector docks for compatibility with several interfaces. The drive comes with a USB 3.0 connector as standard, but docks for FireWire 800 and eSATA are available as optional extras. Note that the GoFlex Pro is available with 320 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB, 1 TB or 1.5 TB of memory. We tested this external hard drive over a USB 3.0 connection, which gave excellent results. With read speeds of 116 MBps and write speeds of 111 MBps, it's fast enough to rival the speedy LaCie Rugged range of external hard drives As well as its fast data transfer speeds, the GoFlex Pro also has the advantage of being very compact, with a total volume of 151 cm3. Plus, it weighs just 205 g. Although there are smaller and lighter external hard drives out there, this model is still perfectly portable.
Each time a new standard is developed, users who have hard drives with old connections are left with slower transfer speeds, and the realization that they’ll have to spend hundreds of dollars to upgrade to a newer model. Seagate looks to alleviate that problem with its new GoFlex line, which let consumers upgrade just the connector for far less than it costs to buy a new drive. The FreeAgent GoFlex Pro ($149), as the first one we’ve tested, offers decent performance plus the assurance of long-term use.Seagate’s GoFlex Pro is small, sleek, and black with silver accents. Measuring 4.9 x 3.2 x 0.6 inches, the drive will easily slip into a pants pocket when a connector is detached. At 6.4 ounces, the GoFlex is considerably lighter than the Iomega eGo USB 3.0 drive (8.7 ounces), but the latter drive is made out of aluminum and built to withstand drops from 51 inches. In order to make its drives future-proof and more flexible, Seagate changed the connection on the drive itself. Instead of a USB, eSATA, or FireWire port, the drive has a proprietary connector; in order to hook it up to a computer, you must attach one of its connectors (sold separately, natch). Versatility comes at a price: the USB 3.0 connector alone (which we used for our tests) costs $29.99, while a kit with an ExpressCard adapter costs $79.99.
Shopping for an external hard drive usually means choosing the device that corresponds to the fastest port (most commonly USB 2.0) on the back of your computer. Although other connections, like FireWire 800, USB 3.0, and eSATA, are quickly gaining popularity for their impressive transfer speeds, most shoppers settle on USB 2.0 because of the premiums that companies charge for the extra ports. Seagate proposes an alternative solution with its latest product, the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive, which features exchangeable "personality cables" that put the port selection in the hands of the consumer. At only $100 for the 320GB model, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable hard drive is well-deserving of our Editor's Choice Award and is a solid bet for budget-minded data gobblers who want to stay ahead of the connection curve. Design and Features The GoFlex shares many of the same design characteristics with the other drives in the Seagate FreeAgent Go lineup, including a .55-inch thick case and a sleek, unassuming silhouette.
