Seagate GoFlex Desk 4TB review

For anybody who thinks all external hard drives are the same, you've clearly never seen Seagate's GoFlex range. GoFlex's ports are built into a removable section that plugs into the main body of the drive using a SATA connector. This can be replaced with another adapter offering a different connectivity technology. The model reviewed here is USB 3.0 (so Mac users can only get USB 2.0 speeds), but if you'd rather use FireWire, you can just buy a new adapter. A Thunderbolt version will no doubt follow soon, as it has already for portable GoFlex drives. The drive is NTFS-formatted out of the box, and comes with a driver so Macs can both read and write this popular PC protocol. Or you can effortlessly reformat it to Mac OS using the bundled setup assistant. Backup and drive management utilities are also included, and there's an LED capacity gauge on the front of the drive, so you always have an approximate idea of how much space remains unused. And at around 17.5p per GB, it's pretty good value for money considering its capacity. In our QuickBench tests, Seagate GoFlex Desk managed to achieve random read speeds of 14.237MB/s, and random writes of 19.312MB/s, which is about what you'd expect for a drive running at USB 2.0 speeds. In fact, the only drawbacks with this hard drive are fairly minor in that the connectivity unit is difficult to pull free, and it picks up fingerprints extremely easily.

External Drive Reviews: HDDs & SSDs

The Seagate GoFlex Desk is a 3.5-inch external hard drive. Like the GoFlex Pro, it stands out from the crowd thanks to a system of interchangeable bases that bring compatibility with various interfaces. Out of the box, the drive comes with a USB 3.0 adapter, but bases can be bought separately for FireWire 800 or eSATA. We tested the 3 TB version of this HDD, but 2 TB and 4 TB models are also available. The USB 3.0 interface hooks up to a computer using the 120 cm cable supplied, which is long enough for most set-ups. The power transformer isn't built into the product, however, so don't forget to bring it along if you take the drive out and about. Over the USB 3.0 connection, data transfer speeds are quite simply excellent, with write speeds reaching 134 MBps and read speeds reaching 143 MBps. This makes the GoFlex Desk one of the fastest external hard drives we've tested yet, ahead of the Western Digital My Book 1 TB.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive Review

Seagate’s FreeAgent series has been around for quite some time, this is Seagate’s most popular series of external drives. FreeAgent GoFlex drives have a very cool plug and play design that allows you to change interfaces for the fastest speeds possible. They also come with included software that makes encryption and creating backups very easy. Today we are checking out the larger 2TB USB 3.0 Desk version of the drive. Is this the perfect external drive for you? Let’s check it out and see! Special thanks to Geeks.com for providing us with the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive to review. Geeks.com is a great place to find external hard drives. We received the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex from Geeks.com and just to show you what it is like to get a product from Geeks.com we made an unboxing video of this product. Check it out below. As I stated in the video the drive had no physical defects or even scratches on it. Besides the drive you also get the power adapter and USB 3.0 cable.

Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk

The Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk is the second desktop version of the portable FreeAgent GoFlex Pro and is the upgrade to the previous version of the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk . The new GoFlex Desk offers more storage space than its predecessor, at 4TB. It also supports USB 3.0 out of the box and offered very good performance in our testing. The drive is designed similarly to its predecessor--it stands up vertically--and can topple easily. It's also rather expensive, costing more than twice the current price of the previous generation, at $250. Expect the street price to soon go down, however. If you're looking for a top-capacity external drive that works with both Windows and OS X (without having to reformat) and that you can use as a docking station for SATA internal drives, the Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk is a good investment. If you can live with 1TB less storage space, it would be a better deal to get the previous version of the drive and a USB 3.0 adapter. Other than the new look that has less rounded corners and the 4TB internal drive on the inside, the 4TB Goflex Desk is very much the same as the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk. The drive comes in two parts: the hard drive and the adapter.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 3TB

This past spring, Seagate confirmed a rumor that we were all hoping to be true... that 3TB hard drives would see a release during 2010. But like many others, I was a little shocked to see the first launch happen the very next month, in late June. There was a catch, though. The first 3TB drive to hit the market wasn't internal, but rather external, coming in the form of a Seagate FreeAgent. Those who were hoping to pack their PCs with 3TB drives were no doubt left a bit disappointed at that announcement, but the lack of an internal option shouldn't last too much longer, as Seagate is still set to release such a model before the year's end. For those looking into what could be the definitive desktop storage option though, this 3TB number is one that's hard to ignore. According to its press release, Seagate states that 3TB is large enough to house 1,500 games (assuming each is 2GB), thousands of photos (at 4MB per photo, that'd be 750,000) and 120 HD movies. The company seems to be a bit modest with its figures here for some reason, because if you encoded your Blu-ray movies into a standard 1080p MKV (~10GB), you'd be able to hold about 300 of them.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (2TB)

The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is the desktop version of the portable FreeAgent GoFlex Pro . The two drives share the same flexible, interchangeable adapter design that removes the worry about what connection types to get for your external hard drive solution. This is because, though the GoFlex Desk comes with just one USB 2.0 connection, it can support any other type of peripheral connection, such as USB 3.0 or FireWire, via snap-in adapters. At the street price of around $220 for the 3TB version (the 2TB and 1TB cost $140 and $100, respectively) the GoFlex Desk is a really good deal, especially when you consider its decent performance and the fact that its adapter also supports any internal SATA hard drives. If you work a lot with internal hard drives and are looking for an external drive for your desktop computer, be it a PC or a Mac, look no further than the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk. The FreeAgent GoFlex Desk comes in two parts: the hard drive and the adapter. The hard drive is basically just the internal hard drive housed in a plastic chassis. At the bottom, the drive's housing has a small opening to reveal the internal hard drive's standard SATA female connector.
