Reviews: Internal Hard Drives

Arriving on the budget hard drive market just after the Western Digital Caviar Green, the Seagate Barracuda LP will have a lot to do to impose itself in this segment. It does have a strong suit to play however and its rotation speed - compared to the standard 5400 rpm - could play in its favour. We managed to get hold of the 2 TB Barracuda LP for testing. It has an SATA-2 interface at 3 Gbps and a 32 MB memory cache. It's a pretty standard budget drive then, apart from the fact that it runs at 5900 rpm. This should theoretically give it a few extra MB/s for file transfers and a few milliseconds during file accesses. We're going to check this out right away in the practical tests. Pure performance Once again, remember that in this part, our rating, in contrast to the final rating, is established according to ranking of all drives tested, including high-performance SSDs. The CrystalDiskMark test shows straight away the good levels of performance achieved - within proportion of course - with large and medium-sized files. The Samsung EcoGreen F3 and Western Digital Caviar Green are a good way behind it: The AS-SSD test confirms these results: The access times are however just about average for drives in its category.
