Sapphire HD 6850 1GB Vapor-X Edition

Between the introductions of new series of video cards between AMD and nVidia, the graphics market is relatively quiet. What we do see, however, is AMD's partners coming out with different variations of cards based off of an original platform. Sapphire has been dominating the market and keeping it busy due to its introductions of upper-end video cards that offer different things. Most recently, Sapphire surprised many of us with its Toxic HD 6950, which overclocked like a dream and showed chances of success while flashing to an HD 6970 bios. A couple of weeks ago Sapphire brought its HD 6850 Vapor-X edition to the table. The Vapor-X suffix means use of a specially designed vapor chamber cooler that brings up expectations for cooling capability. The reference-style blower is generally sufficient, but can be very loud at full speed. Higher efficiency coolers, such as those found on the Vapor-X edition video cards, can achieve similar results but are able to do so at a much lower level of volume. Sapphire has been the pioneer in keeping the market somewhat interesting, as least for the Red Team folks.

Sapphire HD6850 Vapor-X

The AMD HD6xxx series is the newest set of graphics cards available from AMD at this time. As with every other series of graphics cards, there are multiple price ranges and product lines to choose from that offer a variety of features and functions. The HD6850 is a high performance graphics card that comes with an affordable price, which is part of what makes the 6850 from Sapphire so popular. As you would expect from current graphics cards, the HD6850 supports all of the latest technologies like DX11 and Eyefinity, but still retains a reasonable price point. The price of the Sapphire 6850 Vapor-X has not officially been announced at the time of this review but it is expected to be available for right around $180, which puts it right in the middle of the road. It is quite a bit cheaper than the higher 69xx series graphics cards, but at the same time it should perform nearly as well. As for performance, continue reading to see how well the Sapphire HD 6850 Vapor-X stacks up against the competition.

Sapphire HD 6850 : 1120 Shader vs 960 Shader

When AMD launched their Radeon HD6xxx series, we did a review of the Sapphire HD6850. Soon after, we found out that the review sample sent to us contained 1120 shader units instead of the 960 shader units that AMD prescribed for the HD6850. We quickly contacted Sapphire, and confirmed that the review sample did indeed contain 1120 shaders. We did what any reputable product analyst would do, and shipped our review sample back to Sapphire for a retail version of the HD6850 so we could rerun our benchmarks and obtain an accurate result. Asus HD 5870 Matrix, Asus HD 6870 and Sapphire HD 6850 (top to bottom) After slaving over hours of retests, we have compiled results of the retail version of the HD 6850. Our results shows that the 1120 shader version of the HD 6850 often offers about 5% better performance compared to the 960 unit retail HD 6850. However, the card also consumes about 30 watts more power, almost as much as the HD 6870, which offers about 15~20% greater performance over the reference HD 6850 (960 shaders). Since we have more time to play with the cards, we decided to throw in the CrossFire performance by pairing an HD 6870 with an HD 6850.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1GB Video Card Review

AMD’s 6800 Series cards are finally here! If you have been following the news over the past couple of weeks you know that today AMD will be launching the HD 6870 and HD 6850 graphics cards. These new cards are in no way a replacement for AMD’s 5800 Series of cards, but more or less a refresh. They are still built on 40nm, but it seems AMD has focused more on efficiency and some other refinements. With this refresh AMD hope to put themselves back in the graphics lead if they are not there already. Today we will be looking at the HD 6850 from our friends at Sapphire. This card features a clock speed of 775MHz for the core and 1000MHz for the memory. Let’s check it out! From what we gather from AMD this new series of products is named after islands in the Caribbean. The 6850’s GPU is code-named Barts, which is short for Saint Barthelemy Island. AMD has quite a lot coming in the next couple of months. The high-end card you all have been waiting for will be released by the end of next month as the Radeon HD 6900 series. Although today we will be just focusing on the HD 6800 series, more specifically the HD 6850.

Sapphire HD 6850

A year has passed since the world saw the first DirectX 11 cards. AMD's first DX11 card, the HD5870 (codenamed Cypress), was introduced on September 2009. The card held the top spot for almost six months, until Nvidia released the GTX 480. Like CPUs, graphics cards often go through a cycle that mimics Moore's Law. Every 12 to 18 months, it is expected that a new generation of cards will arrive on the market. Every three to five years, we expect to see a major architecture update. So it's no surprise that a year after the first DirectX 11 card came out, AMD is releasing the next generation of graphics cards. The HD6000 series is AMD's newest product line. First up in the series are the HD6850 and HD6870, both of which target at the mainstream market. Our founder, Bjorn Endre, did an excellent job introducing the technical aspect of the new cards; we suggest you read the article to get some background information. In short, since the HD6850 is more like an upgrade to the existing architecture instead of a new design, the underlying architecture has not changed. Instead, the biggest improvement on the HD6000 series is the shader unit: instead of a 4 simple + 1 complex arrangement, it now has 4 medium complexity arrangements.
