Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6670

Today we have the Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6670. This is, among other things a low-profile graphics card capable of being installed in an HTPC with half-height PCI brackets. Coming in at just under $90, this card is “inexpensive” in terms of the graphics world. I personally would expect to be able to play dated, and non-graphic intensive games with ease, let’s see if the HD 6670 can deliver – but first, lets get Sapphire’s take. Sapphire boasts that the HD 6670 is the “highest performing graphics card family in its extensive range that does not require an additional power connection,” quite a claim but a good point, in cases where power consumption or power availability may be an issue (such as upgrading an existing system with an outdated PSU) this card could easily step in as a quick and inexpensive upgrade. Sapphire also mentions that users should expect to be “compatible with the latest games and applications.” This is interesting, with claims like these we should expect playable results on modern game. Let’s see if that becomes a reality.

Sapphire HD 6670 Low Profile Review

Graphics card manufacturers have to develop cards to fill the needs of the masses. To generalize the groups, there are high-end, mid-range, and low-end cards. Sapphire has developed a low profile Radeon HD 6670 that should be one of the fastest low profile cards around, coming in between low- and mid-range in performance. This graphics card has been designed to be universally compatible — it supports HDMI 1.4a, Dual-Link DVI, and D-Sub VGA outputs in both low profile and standard configurations. Auxiliary power is not needed — the main requirement is just an open PCI Express x16 slot. The Sapphire HD 6670 LP has 1GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 4000 MHz on a 128-bit memory bus. The core is built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's 40nm node and packs in 480 stream processors operating at 800 MHz core clock speed. The only major hardware requirement for the card to be used is an open PCI Express x16 slot — with VGA, DVI, and HDMI output, the card is almost universally compatible with any somewhat current system.

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6670 1GB

With the release of the three Turks GPU's (the HD 6450, HD 6570, and HD 6670), AMD now has nine graphics cards in their Northern Island line-up. The lower-end mainstream lineup goes as such. Today we're looking at the HD 6670 from Sapphire, that heads the three 40nm "Turks" graphics cards. It is aimed at the lower to mid-range segment of the market -- those that want the ability to take advantage of DX11 graphics in games, use of 3 monitors for increased productivity; and the HTPC crowd with the HDMI and Audio support, AMD HD3D for watching 3D Blue Ray movies while staying quiet and unobtrusive. A near competitor to this card, from the Nvidia camp, is the GTS 450 which is priced at $115, so we are interested to see how the HD 6670 stacks up against this card. The Sapphire HD 6670 uses the reference specifications and has 716 million transistors, 480 stream processors and 24 texturing units. The core clock is 800 Mhz and its 1024 MB GDDR5 of memory runs over a 128 bit interface giving it 64 Gb/s bandwidth. The memory is clocked at 1000 MHz.

Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6670 review

We've been getting hot under the GPU-collar for the top end of the graphics market in the last few months, with the release of both AMD's Radeon HD 6990 and Nvidia's GeForce GTX 590 dual-GPU monoliths. But we still love a cheeky, cheap GPU like the AMD Radeon HD 6670.It's all very well talking about £600 graphics cards that need PC cases the size of Andre the Giant to house them, and a mini Arc reactor to keep them powered, but how many of us are actually going to drop a month's wages on such a pixel-pushing behemoth?More likely you're going to be looking at a maximum outlay of around £150-£200. And currently there's a lot of graphics processing power available all the way down the price spectrum too.AMD though has come in, GPUs-blazing, at a sub-£100 price point with its latest DirectX 11 graphics cards, the £76 Radeon HD 6670 and the £53 Radeon HD 6570. We tested the 6670 here at 1680 x 1050 at the highest settings, with 4x anti-aliasing, and still managed to hit almost playable framerates on some tough games. Drop some of the GPU-intensive settings and you'll be happily gaming with the AMD Radeon HD 6670.
