SanDisk Ultra Backup 8GB

One of the unspoken truths of computing is that even power users often forget to do backups on the road. Yet it only takes one crash to lose your Word documents, photos, music collection, movies, and other locally stored files. The SanDisk Ultra Backup makes this process so easy that you might decide it's time to stop taking your chances.At 0.48 ounces, the 8GB SanDisk Ultra Backup is the lightest of the USB drives we recently tested. It's also the least stylish; its all-black design looks a bit dated. At 2.9 inches long, the Ultra Backup stuck out a full finger's width longer than the Lexar MX drive, making it a little more obtrusive when connected to a laptop. Still, it's about the same length as the Patriot Memory Supersonic.Even if the Ultra Backup looks a bit staid, it has a unique backup button on top that worked remarkably well. Also, an activity light on the drive helps you see what is happening; during backup or file transfer, the light flashes quickly. In a ready state, the light stays steady.The Ultra Backup comes with same Dmailer app that comes with the Lexar MX drive, but it worked well and setup only took five minutes.

The 32 GB SanDisk Ultra Backup is a USB key that has a button to automatically launch your backups. This system is a very simple way of protecting all your photos, videos and other important files. Like the rest of the manufacturer's latest keys, this one does away with a cap and replaces it with a slide-out USB connector. It's available in four different sizes: 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB. We found unusually varying write speeds on the 32 GB Sandisk Ultra Backup. When copying a few large files, it performed excellently (19 MB/s), but when it came to medium-sized files it fell to 4.1 MB/s and then again to 0.9 MB/s for small files. Overall, the average write speed struggled to reach 8 MB/s; the best keys manage 12 MB/s. We initially thought that this was a problem with the model we tested, so we asked for a second key which SanDisk provided ... and it produced exactly the same results. Nevertheless, the Ultra Backup makes up for this with faster read speeds, with an average of 22.7 MB/s, just behind the excellent 32 GB Maxell SSD.

SanDisk Ultra Backup (64GB)

The SanDisk Ultra Backup packs several features that will appeal to users who want to keep data safe and sound when they’re on the go: fast performance, password protection, and the ability to run programs such as Firefox and OpenOffice directly from the device. What differentiates this 64GB drive ($277 direct; as low as $154 online) from others in SanDisk’s stable is a backup button that makes copying important files to this thumb drive a no-brainer. Although the capacity is small compared to that of similarly priced (but larger) portable hard drives, the rich feature set and easy portability of the Ultra Backup makes it a compelling option. With its black, plastic shell, the Ultra Backup doesn’t look radically different from other SanDisk flash drives. We like the soft-touch paint and glossy accents, but this drive doesn’t have the sturdy metal construction of the SanDisk Extreme Contour. It actually feels somewhat cheap in the hand for a device so pricey. On the plus side, SanDisk opted for a slide-out USB connector that reveals itself when you push the latch on the top of the stick forward. What’s unique about the design is the backup button which, when pressed, begins copying files to the Ultra Backup.
