Samsung SF310

The Samsung SF310 ($729.99 street) isn't quite like other mainstream laptops: It has a distinctive look, but it's more than skin deep. The middling performance may dissuade some buyers, but it polished features may attract others. While those who want performance might be more interested in our Editors' Choice, the Asus U41JF-A1 ($857 street, 4.5 stars), users with less demanding performance requirements may be attracted by the unique feature set of the SF310. The SF310 has a unique look, using the chrome-edged curves of art deco to create a laptop design that is, all at once, modern and vaguely organic. The curves can be seen before the laptop is even open, as there is a slight swell in the lid. The lid is grey plastic with a glossy finish, but the palm rest is made of brushed aluminum. The Samsung SF310 measures 1.3 by 4.6 by 9.2-inches (HWD), and weighs 4.5 pounds, lighter than both the 5-pound Toshiba Satellite M645-S4080 ($1,100 street, 3 stars) and the 4.7-pound Editors' Choice Asus U41JF-A1. The keyboard is surrounded by black plastic, and decorative chrome trim runs along the edges of both the lid and palm rest. Along either side of the keyboard, the chassis has a little "fin" that protrudes slightly.

Samsung SF310 review

Any new thin and light weighing in at £750 has a lot to prove in a crowded market. It needs to stand out stylistically, yet still offer strong value for money. It's not an easy task, because on one side you'll find Apple's impossibly thin MacBook Air redefining style, while on the other you have the ever-expanding glut of netbooks, typified by the likes of Samsung's own N230 proving that a little cash can go an incredibly long way if the right components are used. What hope is there for the likes of the SF310 then? What can it do to raise more than a passing interest?First impressions are positive – a run-down of the components list used in the Samsung SF310 will placate the techno savvy. The presence of an Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia discrete graphics, LED screen and good storage options all quickly put to bed any notion that this is a trumped-up netbook. No, the Samsung SF310 is a fully fledged laptop, and it just so happens to be wrapped up in a delightly designed shell. The sculpted curves on displays may not be quite to Apple's Macbook Air levels, but this is a machine that celebrities won't be embarrassed to be seen holding.
