If we hadn’t just spent time ogling HP’s Envy 17, we might have appreciated the Samsung RF710’s aesthetics more. After all, it too sports a sleek, sophisticated design. It’s just that everything about the RF710 looks low-rent compared to the Envy 17. That’s not so surprising, considering that the RF710 costs more than $1,000 less. The two notebooks have nearly the exact same dimensions, but the RF710 is a pound or so lighter. That’s because, rather than sporting an all-metal chassis, as the Envy 17 does, the RF710 is primarily plastic. It’s made to look nice, with a metallic finish offsetting the chiclet keyboard, and a glossy black finish on the lid and screen bezel—which will unfortunately be marred by fingerprints in short order. The screen itself is also of a lesser quality, with a lower resolution of 1600x900 and noticeably less-vibrant colors. You can connect the RF710 to a larger display using either its HDMI or VGA port, which might do better justice to the Blu-ray movies you can play in the notebook’s optical drive. Fortunately, Samsung didn’t skimp on its processor.
Samsung's RF710 desktop replacement notebook is a capable unit with a strong mix of components, but it ultimately seems to underperform relative to other systems in this class. On the other hand, it's a relatively attractive unit, all muted dark gray and silver, and it's relatively light at 7.5 pounds with power brick. The keyboard layout is fairly standard, with the only negative being the smaller size of the function key row. Having smaller function keys isn't all that bad, but the smaller size extends to the Home/PgDn cluster, which makes using them a little awkward. The overall feel of the keyboard while typing is excellent, but I found my fingers occasionally slipping off keys when touch typing. I wish the chiclet style keyboards had just a small indentation in the center, as most desktop keyboards do. The trackpad, on the other hand, proved to be one of the better ones I've used. Samsung got the sensitivity correct right out of the box - not too twitchy, not too sluggish. It also avoids the problem that some trackpads have of reacting to fingers that hover just a little above the pad surface. The RF710 ships with a Nvidia GeForce GT 330M GPU. The 330M won't win gaming performance awards, but it's capable enough.
