The Samsung R580 (Core i5) is the South Korean electronics giant's entry-level multimedia machine. This latest version is the first to feature a processor from Intel's Core i5 family, and offers excellent power, performance and portability at a very reasonable price that won't break the bank. The first thing to notice about the laptop is its stylish design. Instead of implementing a dull, matt-black look, Samsung has opted for an interesting red and black patterned finish. Appearing on both the lid and chassis itself, it won't be to everyone's tastes, but certainly isn't offensive and will stand out in the crowd. The 15.6-inch screen may not boast the high resolution of the Packard Bell ProBook 6440b or Sony VAIO VPC-EB1Z0E/B, yet it is just as vivid with excellent colour reproduction, while also being very bright. This makes it ideal for photographers or video makers looking for a colourful and accurate panel. The keyboard boasts an isolated-key style, with plenty of space between the keys making it hard to miss-hit a letter. It's also a very intuitive keyboard and we were typing at full speed very quickly.Core i5 powerThe laptop is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor, which works alongside 4096MB of DDR3 memory.
A smaller version of the R780, the Samsung R580 brings, according to the company, "a touch of colour" to overall performance. Its configuration makes it a good allrounder and its attractive design means it sticks out from the crowd. Red and black, the Samsung R580 doesn't go unnoticed. We like its somewhat out of the ordinary design, especially as the finish is very fine. The main drawback is all the smooth glossy plastic which picks up finger marks and dust all too easily. However, these marks are less obvious than on the glossy black that is found almost everywhere on competition models and Samsung has done well to retain matte plastic (black) for the area surrounding the screen. The machine is quite firm and robust overall, including the screen hinges which seem resistent. The has separated, nicely responsive keys (15 x 15 mm). Typing is supple, quiet and rapid. We like having a number pad, situated on the right, even though the keys used are thinner than elsewhere. The space is well-used overall. There is a lack of multimedia buttons, which are however not indispensable (you'll be able to use shortcuts with the "Fn" key).
Samsung has recently stepped up its design game with a line of laptops whose facades impress as much as their powerful guts. The 15.6-inch, $949 Samsung R580 (available at Best Buy for just $829) sports an eye-catching style and the same powerful Core i5 processor as the larger R780. This model brings more than just a trimmed down size; a Blu-ray drive lets users play the latest movies in high definition. However, the display doesn’t support 1080p, and we don’t imagine many buyers plugging this laptop into a big-screen TV. So if Blu-ray is just a bonus, is this multimedia machine really a good deal?Boasting Samsung’s Touch of Color design, the R580 has an attractive deep red finish that fades to black toward the edges on the lid. On the inside, the front edge is red, but the back half is mostly black. The chassis picked up some fingerprints, but that was mitigated somewhat by the swirling Crystal Wave pattern. The glossiness doesn’t extend to the display’s half-inch bezel, and the island-style keys themselves are matte with a slight hint of friction. A set of small speakers grace the top of the deck, and the power button sits to the right. Another nice touch: four small glowing LEDs surround the touchpad.
Watching high definition content is a popular pastime that's keeping desktop replacements in demand. Whether it's streaming content from Hulu or renting a Blu-ray title through Netflix, a laptop with a big screen is usually high on the priority list. The Samsung R580 ($850 list, at Best Buy) is the least expensive laptop I've seen that comes with an Intel Core i5 processor and a Blu-ray drive. Factor in a 500GB hard drive and a nice midrange graphics card, handing it an Editors' Choice in the desktop replacement category is the only logical step. Shiny laminates featuring geometric patterns or floral designs on laptops are nothing new. While others, like HP, Gateway, and Toshiba, went with a single color, the R580 uses two: A deep cherry red stain in the center that fades into a thick black border. Embedded in the cherry/black glaze is a ripple pattern, which, altogether, Samsung is calling its Crystal Wave design. Though the material used is as plasticky as the HP Pavilion dv6-2150us ($799.98 list, ) and Gateway NV7915u ($600 street, ), the R580 stands out from the crowd. Even so, metal frames, like those found in the Asus UL50VF-A1 ($850 street, ) and the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (SD slot) ($1,699 direct, ), are more appealing from a design standpoint.
Samsung has not traditionally played a huge role in the evolution of notebooks. Companies such as Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus have all done noteworthy things to push the envelope, with the Adamo XPS, ThinkPad, IdeaPad and Eee PC all coming from this group. Even those who don't follow technology on a daily basis would probably associate those names with notebooks, but we wonder just how big a following Samsung has in the mobile computing sector. It's not like Samsung is a newbie in the notebook world, but they've definitely played a more "low-key" role over the past few years. Taking all that into consideration, we have to commend Samsung on the launch of their R80 series. These machines were just introduced this month, and we have managed to grab one of the first R580 notebooks (the 15.6" in the R80 series, which is accompanied by the 14" R480 and the 17.3" R780) to leave the production line. Samsung's making quite a bold move here. This is one of the first mobile Core i5 machines out there, particularly when you're looking for a Core i5 machine with both style and a full number pad.
Each time our laptop/desktop retail roundup comes along, we try to keep our eyes out for one laptop whose set of configurations is a surprisingly good deal, a package that's a steal compared to what you might find in other models. In this year's mainstream laptop selection, the Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US seems to be it. This is the first Samsung laptop we've seen in this size (previously, we've reviewed a small handful of Samsung Netbooks), and the specs are great: an Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics, a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and a Blu-ray drive, along with a 15.6-inch screen. While the cost for this system is higher than other mainstream machines in this roundup, for $829 it's an excellent value for what's being offered, at only $30 more than the larger and lesser-feature Toshiba Satellite A505-S6025, and for less money than either of the other Core i5 mainstream laptops we've reviewed recently. It's not a spectacularly attractive or ergonomically friendly machine, and the battery life is on the disappointing side, but this Samsung has an ideal base package of features for someone who wants to do nearly everything on their laptop and not pay dearly for it. On the outside, the Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US has a slick finish.
