Just because a laptop is low cost doesn't mean it has to be light on features, and the Samsung R540 packs some serious hardware into its sub-£399 frame. At the heart of this laptop is an Intel Pentium 2GHz processor which, although still lowly on the scale, outstrips the Celeron that powers the Fujitsu LifeBook A530. There's also 4096MB of memory, double that of the LifeBook, and a 500GB hard drive, again, twice the size. The Samsung's processor came out results in our lab tests, helped hugely by the extra RAM. In real terms, the extra processing power and RAM do wonders for the performance of the Samsung R540. Basic tasks perform noticeably smoother and faster, and you can even stretch to harder tasks like editing standard-definition video. Metallic chic The chassis of the Samsung is solid, and feels well built. The plastic top doesn't feel especially high quality, but the shiny metallic look will turn heads, and also evoke surprised noises from any stranger who finds out its price tag. The Samsung's screen is sharp and bright, and is perfectly adequate for watching SD movies and viewing your pictures. At a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 the panel isn't capable of 1080p, not that the laptop could play it back anyway.
Most of us don't want to spend more than a few hundred on a notebook computer -- Samsung's answer is their $699.99 R540, featuring a 15.6-inch display and dual-core Intel Core i3 processor. We take a look.BUY the R540JA02 15.6 Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit NoteBookABT $729.00Amazon.com $633.62see all pricing for the R540JA02 15.6 Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit NoteBookOur Samsung R540-JA02 review unit has the following specifications: This R540 model has entry-level specifications; competing notebooks with a similar configuration can be had for $100 - $150 less online. The R540 is also offered in a higher-end configuration featuring a Blu-ray drive, low-end ATI Radeon graphics card and a more powerful Core i5 processor for MSRP $999.99 (a little on the pricey side). Build and DesignThe R540 has a generic design with an attractive-looking faux aluminum finish. Design features are minimal; the R540 does not even have volume up/down buttons. The notebook is constructed entirely of plastic; as a result it weighs only 5.29 lbs. The chassis has an average thickness for a 15.6” notebook at about 1.4 inches.
The Samsung R540 seems to target a demanding audience, since its CPU, GPU, and all-around performance can drive powerful applications and games. But a mediocre display, a weak battery, and a stingy allocation of ports keep it from hitting the mark. If you're looking for a midrange PC, the R540 is still worth considering, but don't expect a high-end system on the cheap. For about $950 (as of September 20, 2010), the R540 delivers some impressive specs, including a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 450M processor, an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5450 GPU with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of system RAM, and a 400GB hard drive. The R540 scored a respectable 107 on our WorldBench 6 benchmark test suite, and fared well in real-world performance testing. From productivity software to demanding games, it can keep up with any program. Regrettably, you won't be able to enjoy the R540 away from an outlet for long; The laptop lasted only 2 hours, 27 minutes in our battery test--a weak showing, but not sufficiently dismal to negate the machine's virtues entirely. The input devices feel good in a plain, understated way. The keyboard comes with a full number pad and no other extras.
"Reliable", "stylish", "elegant" and "robust", such are Samsung's claims for the R540. Pretty standard looking, it is a delicious chocolate colour and has an all-rounder configuration. Without aiming to set the world on fire with its performance levels, it does however offer velvetine quiet and "out of the ordinary" image quality. Enough to get us salivating! Like a big slab of chocolate, the Samsung R540 certainly makes you lick your lips. Various shades of brown constantly remind you of a chocolate bar and chocoholics will love it! We also like the high level of quality of the matte plastic around the keyboard and screen. As well as giving good comfort and a nice touch, they are resistant to fingermarks and allow you to keep your PC clean and presentable. Only the hood is glossy... like raspberry sauce. Overall the laptop is well-assembled and seems robust, including on the screen hinging. The is comfortable to use and has a number pad. Typing is supple and quiet, while the keys are well-positioned and are a good size (18 x 18 mm base and 15 x 15 mm upper). It just lacks backlighting that would have improved visibility in dark rooms, although the fact that the characters are in white is already a very practical thing.
