Samsung QX411-W01UB

Roughly a year ago, I reviewed the Samsung QX410-J01, a new and exciting laptop by a relative outsider. This laptop wowed me with a bevy of cutting-edge features and a stellar design, matched with an aggressive price in the $800 range. This year, the Samsung QX411-W01UB continues that design trend with this year's updated processors and other updated specs, including USB 3.0 connectivity. Even more impressively, this retail-only Best Buy configuration is only $649, which just shows how much cheaper laptops have gotten. A Core i5 second-gen processor, 6GB of RAM, and a 640GB hard drive are a bargain for this price. The closest equivalent is the Dell Inspiron 14z, but configuring it with similar specs takes its price to $749, a full $100 more than this Samsung. The better news is that the Samsung QX411-W01UB's battery life is among the best of mainstream laptops we've recently tested. I'll make this simple for you: if you're in the market for a Core i5 laptop, don't feel the need to customize it, and don't mind that you're not getting higher-end gaming graphics, then the QX411-W01UB would be an excellent choice.

Samsung QX411-W01

The Samsung QX411-W01 ($799.99 list at Best Buy) is easily one of the most impressive designs in the mainstream laptop category, competing with the likes of the Asus U46E-BAL5 ($699.99 list, 4.5 stars) and Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299 direct, 3.5 stars). The high-grade parts - an Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge processor, Nvidia graphics, and 8-hour battery - are protected by a sturdy, eye-catching aluminum shell. There are some minor drawbacks, however, like the imperfect clickpad and the fact that the battery is sealed in. top notch There are plenty of aluminum laptops, but the QX411-W01 has found itself a place among the elite. The brushed design and gun-metal hue look even more attractive because of the QX411's slim dimensions, measuring just one inch thick. The aluminum has the same same feeling you get from the MacBook Pro 13-inch. A solidly constructed metal frame also means that at 5.1 pounds, it's slightly heavier than its plastic counterparts, like the Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM ($829.99 list, 4 stars) and Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-7616DBK ($649.99 list, 3 stars), both 4.9 pounds. Had it not been for a glass layer, the 14-inch widescreen would have looked the same as that of Asus U46E-BAL5 and Sony VPC-EG16FM.
