Samsung SSD 830 Series (256GB)
If 2011 wasn't the year that solid-state drives (SSDs) went mainstream, it was a year they delivered newly groundbreaking performance. First came the incredibly fast 240GB OCZ Vertex 3, which was followed by its slightly less impressive 120GB version. Those looking for a lower-capacity SSD had at least one outstanding choice, the 128GB Samsung SSD 830 Series. But when Samsung's drives hit higher capacities, how well do they stand up against OCZ's? Pretty well, at least with regards to the 256GB version ($429.99 list)—though it doesn't come out on top in every situation. Even so, it has all the features you have a right to expect from a top SSD contender at the beginning of 2012, starting with 6Gbps SATA III. (Samsung's 2010 debut consumer model, the SSD 470 Series, only used 3Gbps SATA II.) More impressively, this 2.5-inch-form-factor drive (which measures only 7mm in height—on the short side for an SSD) is Samsung all the way down, from its stylish and shiny black brushed-metal frame to its three-core controller to the DRAM to the 20nm MLC toggle DDR NAND flash memory itself. Samsung even claims that the drive's wear-leveling and garbage collection technologies are proprietary (though traditional TRIM is supported).
Samsung 830 Series SSD Review
Samsung is kind of a big deal. In addition to manufacturing everything from tablets to televisions to turbines, the Korean giant is one of the world’s largest producers of DRAM and NAND flash memory, and it has long provided SSDs to OEMs and systems integrators. Samsung entered the retail SSD market in late 2010, with its 470 Series SSD delivering performance on par with the first-gen SandForce drives that owned the top end of the market. It’s now late 2011, and the goalposts have shifted. Samsung’s Series 830 drive boasts a slimmer look, a refreshed controller, and a 6Gb/s SATA interface. Can the new part compete with today’s top SSDs? Like the Series 470 SSD, the Series 830 is top-to-bottom Samsung, from the 20nm toggle NAND, to the 256MB of DDR2 cache, to the tri-core ARM processor controlling the drive. Samsung tells us the three-core design allowed them to dedicate one core to full-time garbage collection. The controller is similar to the one on the Series 470, but the Series 830 brings much-needed 6Gb/s SATA support. And boy, does it cook. The 256GB Series 830 SSD we tested matched the fastest second-gen SandForce drives, such as OCZ’s Vertex 3, in nearly every benchmark, and it exceeded them in some.

Samsung has taken the unprecedented move with its Samsung SSD 830 256GB of using its own individually created firmware, DRAM and NAND. Does that give it the edge?Samsung has been overshadowed a bit by the likes of Corsair, OCZ and Kingston in the high performance SSD market. The latter companies opted for the Sandforce controller in their drives and have hit perpetually impressive sequential read/write performance levels with each new generation, which makes them the go-to guys for enthusiast storage.It's not like Samsung is a newcomer to the market though; far from it. Its OEM dealings with industry giant Apple contribute to a 26% market share in SSDs across consumer and OEM sectors. The Korean powerhouse was also heavily involved in the early days of the SSD, providing reference designs which other manufacturers built their drives around.The arrival of this consumer drive, the Samsung SSD 830, makes a lot of sense when you consider Samsung's know-how and quiet but significant involvement in the market. Industry leaders like OCZ's Vertex 3 Max IOPS make mincemeat of the SSD 830 in read performance and compressible writes, but if you move tons of media files around, you'll notice the SSD 830's superior incompressible write.
Samsung SSD 830 Series
It was back in December of last year that we took a look at the Samsung SSD 470 Series solid state drive. Unlike the vast majority of other SSDs on the market at the time that used third-party controllers from SandForce or Indilinx (among others), the Samsung SSD 470 featured nothing but Samsung-built components. The Samsung SSD 470 series was / is a SATA II drive with a Samsung controller, Samsung DRAM cache, and Samsung MLC NAND flash memory. When we tested the drive, we found it to be a fairly good performer, but it wasn't quite on the level of the higher-end drives available at the time, like the SandForce-based OCZ Vertex 2, for example. Although they haven't been breakout-hits with enthusiasts, Samsung's solid state drives have been quite successful due to strong relationships with a number of OEMs, including Apple. With the release of their new SSD 830 Series Solid State Drives, however, Samsung seems poised to make some inroads with enthusiasts as well. We've had a Samsung SSD 830 Series drive humming along in the lab for a little while now and have been impressed by the drive's behavior and performance. They won't be available for a few more weeks and pricing isn't finalized just yet, but we've got the rest of the story on tap for you in the pages ahead.
