Samsung 830 Series 128GB Solid State Drive Review
When it comes to SATA 6GB/s solid state drives or solid state drives in general there are a few names that come to mind, OCZ, Kingston and Patriot are just a few but Samsung is not really one of the them. For the consumer market Samsung gave us the 470 series drive and now they have entered the SATA 6GB/s segment with the 830 series. What is interesting about this drive is that it uses Samsung's own controller, NAND and DRAM. Something we have not seen on any solid state drive that we have reviewed. The 830 series has rated speeds of 520MB/s read and 320MB/s write. Let's see how this drive stacks up against other SATA 6GB/s drives that we have tested. The 830 Series drive comes in a rather large retail box for a solid state drive. This drive is actually the laptop drive upgrade kit. On the back there is a list of features and specifications. Samsung SSD 830 Series (128GB)
Samsung made an impressive debut in the consumer SSD space a year ago with its 470 Series drives. These delivered attractive performance, but were hampered by their use of SATA II, which with a maximum 3Gbps transfer rate is fully half of what the new top-of-the-line SATA III enables. Now Samsung has returned with its 830 Series, which uses SATA III, and the 128GB drive we tested is not as good as we hoped—it's even better. Keeping pace with our high-capacity SSD Editors' Choice, the 240GB OCZ Vertex 3, in many situations, this Samsung 830 Series is a cinch for our lower-capacity award. As is true of all SSDs, you'll pay dearly for that speed—but enthusiasts, semi-professionals, and speed cravers are likely to find it worth the dough. This 2.5-inch-form-factor drive (which measures only 7mm in height—short for an SSD) is all Samsung, all the time, from its stylish black frame to its three-core controller to the DRAM to the 20nm MLC toggle DDR NAND flash memory itself. Samsung even claims that the drive's wear-leveling and garbage collection technologies are proprietary (though traditional TRIM is supported).
