We had plenty of good things to say about the Vertex 3 when it stormed onto the SSD market earlier this year. You only have to look at its read/write figures to see why. Quite simply, the Vertex 3 managed to harness the power of the Sandforce SF-2281 controller to the greatest extent. Like any SF-2281 controlled SSD it did take time performing incompressible writes (write speeds reporting at less than half that of reads), but 4K random read performance and real-world tasks, such as Windows boot times had us singing high praise for the Vertex 3. Benchmark figures and even observable desktop performance don't tell the whole story though. Along with other manufacturers who had issues with the latest SandForce controller, OCZ's Vertex 3 suffered from some reliability issues too. Mind you, OCZ estimates that only two thirds of a percent of Vertex 3s experienced reliability problems, specifically BSOD when running Windows 7, but any SSD bearing the marks of unreliability is going to be avoided. After discovering some bizarre activities caused by a certain SATA command, OCZ and the controller's manufacturer SandForce released a firmware update that appears to have stamped out the issue.
Advancement in the computer industry is very fast paced. As technology advances, things often get smaller and faster. Over the last couple of years, we have seen SSDs moving in a very rapid pace so the controllers matured to take full advantage of SATA 6Gbps interface and NAND die shrink from 32/34 nm to 25nm. The NAND's die shrink allows more storage capacity per NAND device, doubling the maximum NAND capacity to 8GB. This would allow SSD manufacturers to produce SSDs of the same capacity with less NAND devices, and also to make larger storage capacity drives. However, the transition to 25nm NAND is not all trouble-free. While the die shrink allows larger storage capacity, it also leads to a reduction in the durability as the number of write cycles has been reduced. SSDs have a very finite number of write/programmable cycles. With the die-shrink, the number of write cycles is also reduced. 34nm NAND has about 5000 write cycles, whereas 25nm NAND has only 3000. Even considering the reduction in write cycles, 3000 should still be enough for average users and we do not expect most 25nm SSDs to fail during their lifespan.
Hot on the heels of our Vertex 3 review, OCZ Technology is back with the promise of an even faster drive, the Vertex 3 Max IOPS. Frankly, given the performance of the Vertex 3 it is hard to fathom that OCZ could so quickly fine-tune that powerhouse of a drive to find more untapped performance to release, but that is the claim. The 120GB Max IOPS promises an additional 15,000 of 4KB random write IOPS over the Vertex 3, while the 240GB version gains an additional 5,000 IOPS for a whopping total of 65,000 4KB random write IOPS. Avid followers of solid-state drives may remember the original Vertex series, specifically the Vertex Turbo. The Turbo took the same Indilinx Barefoot controller found in the Vertex and overclocked it slightly to boost drive performance, although otherwise the drives were physically identical to one another. The Vertex 3 Max IOPS promises a tangible boost to IOPS performance over the already blazingly fast Vertex 3, but unlike the Vertex Turbo there is no overclocking or simple firmware tweaking behind the Max IOPS. OCZ's Vertex 3 Max IOPS is an altogether different beast under the hood. Of course the SF-2281 SandForce controller is still present and unchanged.
