OCZ has been one of the big players in the solid state drive market since the first consumer drives were available. We have seen them really push the technology to the limit over the past year, but they are also still concerned about you the customer. That is why they have released 3.5-inch versions of both their Vertex 2 and Agility 2 solid state drives. The 3.5-inch form factor means you do not need an adapter and OCZ claims this design is a lower cost per GB. Let’s take a look at this newly designed 3.5-inch version of the Vertex 2. Special thanks to OCZ for providing us with the Vertex 2 120GB 3.5-inch Solid State Drive to review. The Vertex 2 comes in a nice retail box with a picture of the drive on the front and some information about the drive. If you flip the box over there is more information about the drive and the list of specifications. Opening the box up everything is nicely packed inside and protected with a large piece of foam. Inside you will find the Vertex 2 3.5-inch drive, user’s guide, and a sticker that says, “My SSD is faster than your HDD”, which I always get a kick out of. Obviously there is no mounting adapter since this is a 3.5-inch drive.
Fast, silent and power-efficient; it seems like the only thing not to like about SSDs is the price. OCZ has sent over its Vertex 2 SSD, a 120GB model that straddles the performance/price boundary at around $220. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. The OCZ Vertex 2 on our test bench is a 2.5-inch 120GB model weighing in at 77g and 9.5mm thick. In the retail box, OCZ bundles a 3.5-inch adapter bracket, for using the drive in a desktop rather than a notebook. Maximum speeds on the box are up to 285 MB/s read rate, 275 MB/s write rate and up to 250 MB/s sustained writes. The Vertex 2 uses the well-esteemed SandForce SF-1200 controller, which has quickly moved to a strong position particularly among OS X users for whom the Mac OS lacks Windows' TRIM support. TRIM - which the Vertex 2 does support - is used by some platforms to notify not only the OS file system that a file has been deleted but the SSD itself; that means slightly slower deletes but less degradation of performance over time. Apple is yet to add TRIM support to OS X, but the SandForce controller works around that absence with its own “garbage collection” routines at the drive level.
OCZ's latest iteration of the Vertex 2 comes with another 20GB of space from a new Sandforce update. You know how it is. You wait for one genre defining new bit of kit to come along, and suddenly three appear at once. OCZ's Vertex 2 arrived in the TechRadar labs armed with a new controller chip that promises to revolutionise SSD behaviour, only to be followed rapidly by Corsair's Force F100 and OCZ's own Agility 2.Both of which also boast the same advanced controller that promises to revolutionise... well, you get the idea. The controller in question is Sandforce's SF-1200. It's different because of the way it handles write instructions to the drive pages. In most SSDs, writing data is slowed down because the controller needs to erase information already in the target page, a technical hangover from traditional drive management. The SF-1200, however, makes heavy use of the TRIM technology built into Windows 7 to make clear out old data well ahead of any write operation. Drives like the Vertex 2 should therefore be unleashed when it comes to recording information.
Does OCZ's Vertex 2 smell familiar? It should do. After all, it boasts the same 100GB capacity as the Corsair Force F100. More importantly, it's the second SSD in our group to pack the impressive new Sandforce SF-1200 controller chipset. But which is better? As Harry Hill would say, there's only one way to find out. Fight! Actually, you need only make a price comparison and then conclude in favour of the Corsair. Right? Not so fast. The Vertex 2 has a technical advantage thanks to a special firmware brew claimed to unlock additional random write performance. The details are a little more complicated, but the basic idea is that the firmware gives the SF-1200 the random write performance of the more expensive SF-1500 chip. As it happens, reports suggest that the SF-1200 and SF-1500 use the very same processor die. Only the firmware differs. As we've yet to sample an SSD with the SF-1500, we can neither confirm nor deny. Still, that's the theory. Unfortunately for the Vertex 2, the reality doesn't quite square. Put simply, the Force F100 matches or beats it in every single benchmark – synthetic, real-world, whatever.
In June, we tested OCZ’s Vertex Limited Edition, one of two drives we had that used the SandForce SF-1200 controller. At the time, we wondered why OCZ would artificially limit supplies of an SSD with such great performance. And now we know: It was a trial run to help SandForce, a recent startup, gain capital to scale up production. It’s since done that, and in gratitude to OCZ has granted the company exclusive random-write-IOPS-boosting firmware for its Vertex 2 drives. The new firmware will be available to other SF-1200 drives (probably by the time this issue hits stands)—but as of press time, it’s an OCZ Vertex 2 exclusive deal. Ethics of “exclusive firmware” aside, is the Vertex 2 any better than its Limited Edition stable mate? Sweet particulate platypus, yes. We lauded the sequential write speeds of the two SandForce drives we tested previously, but noted that their sequential reads were still lower than those of Barefoot drives like the Corsair Nova and Patriot Torqx. The Vertex 2 has no such limitations; its HDTune 4.01 average sequential write is identical to the LE’s, but its average sequential read is a whopping 228MB/s on our test bed, faster than any SSD we’ve tested to date.
It has everything it needs to perform excellently, including a SandForce SF-SF1222 controller which needs no introduction. Other hardware features include a 3 Gbps SATA-2 interface, but no cache: one of the features of the SandForce controller is that it uses the memory available on the drive itself without having an impact on performance or the amount of space available (see inset). It comes in several versions, but this test is based on the 120 GB drive. There's no use beating around the bush: the Vertex 2 has quite simply the most impressive performance of any hard drive we've had in our lab so far. That might not be hundreds, but it does include some key players like the or the . The Vertex 2 pushes the limits back even further. It doesn't smash all our previous records, but it gains a few precious MB/s here and there, and and puts in a solid performance even in the toughest tests. In short, it does well in every situation. Its results on the test reinforce what we already knew from running : The access times are pretty standard for a good quality SSD, but still much better than a traditional hard drive.
A little over a week ago we had the opportunity to review our first SandForce-based solid state drive the Corsair Force Series F100. If you have been following solid state drives at all you know that many drive manufactures are dropping the controllers from Indilinx and going with these new SandForce controllers. The new SandForce controllers are very impressive and really push solid state drives to their limits. Today we will be taking a look at the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB Solid State Drive which is based off the SF-1200 controller. It is designed for maximum performance for the mainstream sector. It is available in capacities ranging from 50GB all the way up to 480GB, let’s take a look! Special thanks to OCZ for providing the Vertex 2 120GB Solid State Drive to review. The Vertex 2 comes in a retail package that is not much larger than the drive itself. On the front there is a list of features and on the back there is some information about the drive and the specifications. When you open the package up you can slide everything out. Inside you will find the Vertex 2 drive, a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch bracket, mounting screws, information and a sticker.
The OCZ Vertex 2 utilizes the new SandForce SF-1200 controller. We've been waiting on a drive with the SandForce controller for a while and when OCZ approached us about taking a look at it we were eager to get it into the lab to take a look. There are other SandForce controller drives out there but this one uses a proprietary Firmware that allows it up to 50k IOPS making it in a class by itself. OCZ has been testing the SandForce SF-1200 and SF-1500 controllers for months internally and during CES they made the formal announcement that OCZ would be bringing out the Vertex 2 series of SSDs using these two new controllers. The SF-1500 is used in the OCZ Vertex Limited edition and the SF-1200 is used in the Vertex 2 lineup. The SF-1200 has performance close to the SF-1500 at a fraction of the cost so we can't wait to get it on the bench and drive it until it screams. The Vertex 2 will be available in 50GB (OCZSSD2-2VTX50G), 100GB (OCZSSD2-2VTX100G) and 200GB (OCZSSD2-2VTX200G) drive capacities (50GB $199.00, 100GB at $409.99, 200GB for $749.99.
Today we have a quick preview of the OCZ Vertex 2 SSD that is currently breezing its way through our SSD testing benchmarks. Sure, hexa-core Gulftown and Thuban CPUs are all the current rage, and graphics cards like the Radeon HD 5870 and GeForce GTX 480 are literally sizzling right now. But any enthusiast will probably say that solid-state drives are still where things are at, and we have to agree given the remarkable boost in performance and system responsiveness which is seen over traditional hard disks. For most, prices have been the deterring factor, but as anyone familiar with Intel's benchmark-setting X25-M G2 series will recall, demand was so strong that it took over six months before drives settled around Intel's recommended MSRP! The SSD we have just received is not a value drive (even amongst other SSDs), but rather it is targeted squarely at the cutting-edge enthusiast that wants top-notch performance and is willing to pay a bit more to get it. And it promises to blow Intel's X25-M G2 out of the water. SandForce is a name quickly circulating amongst tech enthusiasts and with good reason. OCZ's Vertex 2 is powered by the SandForce SF-1200 controller and uses the "older" SATA 2 interface, but that doesn't seem to pose a problem for this drive from what we have seen so far!
Three months ago we tested the first SandForce-based solid-state drive when OCZ treated us with a sample of the Vertex 2 Pro. As a true newcomer to the SSD market, the new controller took us by surprise with encouraging results, but the fact remained that this was an enterprise class product and few consumers were ever going to lay their hands on one of these drives. At the time we were also told that a successor to the original consumer-oriented Vertex would be arriving just a few months down the road. Then last March we got a taste of what the Vertex 2 would be all about with the OCZ Vertex Limited Edition. This was part of a limited run and somewhat obscure deal that had OCZ producing 5,000 units of speedy solid-state drives armed with a hybrid SandForce SF-1200/1500 controller. The Vertex LE delivered performance that was comparable to the unreleased Vertex 2 Pro, which used the high-end SF-1500 controller. Hard to say if OCZ overestimated demand but it's been almost two months and you can still buy the Limited Edition drives that come in 100GB and 200GB flavors. Yet, we were still left waiting for the true successor of the highly popular Vertex, and here it is, in our lab ready for testing and expected to be hitting shelves pretty soon.
