OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid 1TB

Today we are taking a look at one of OCZ's most innovative solutions: the RevoDrive Hybrid. With the rising popularity of SSD caching technologies, OCZ decided it was time to pair up a drive with their Revodrive unit to provide an excellent performing high capacity solution. This seems to be a very capable solution on paper but real performance will require some testing and performance analysis to see what this unit can really do and if it has any place in the world of high performance systems. In this review we will be taking a look at how the RevoDrive Hybrid performs and what benefits it offers. If it performs as well as other drive caching offerings we have used this could be an amazing solution. One thing to note is that the current retail price is $329.99 for a 1TB drive with a 100GB high speed caching solution, all in a single PCI-E package carrying a 3 year warranty. The packaging that holds the RevoDrive Hybrid seems like a standard thin box at the first look, but after removing the inner box we see things change quite a bit here as there is a solid inner box with a drawer style enclosure. Once the inner drawer style box is removed we see the foam which holds the RevoDrive Hybrid in place and also keeps it safe during shipping.

OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid Solid State Drive Review

We have already seen one hybrid solid state drive solution in the Synapse Cache drive from OCZ. You pair it with your normal hard drive and it acts as a cache drive doing most of the work to speed things up. If you are familiar with OCZ’s RevoDrive series of drives you know they offer some of the fastest transfer speeds available on the consumer level when it comes to solid state drives. OCZ has decided to take this incredible speed put it together with their caching technology and brings us the RevoDrive Hybrid. It is a PCI-Express card that has a normal 1TB drive on it for storage and 128GB of solid state flash to do the caching. The drive has rated speeds of up to 910MB/s read and 810MB/s write. The RevoDrive Hybrid comes in a nice retail box that has a photo of the drive on the front and a list of features. On the back there is some more information about the drive. OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid PCIe Hybrid SSD Review

Solid-state drives are the hottest thing in desktop and laptop computers, but affordability is generally considered to be the single largest reason preventing mass adoption. Reliability is always a concern, but actual return rates across the industry tend to be very low, typically ranging from 0.1% to 5% at the high-end of the scale. Instead, price is the main issue with adoption because the NAND flash cost alone usually comprises over three quarters of an SSD's cost. Given this limitation there are only so many tricks that can be done to mitigate the SSD's cost. Buying smaller capacity SSDs is one option, but that only goes so far before it becomes self-defeating. Small SSD caching drives are another, but they are either dependent on chipset technologies (Intel's SRT) or still require a moderate investment in a discrete SSD with an advanced caching software suite. OCZ Technology has chosen a relatively unique approach to this problem by combining the longstanding RevoDrive platform with a traditional, 1TB hard disk drive in order to create the RevoDrive Hybrid. The Hybrid comprises a standard pair of SandForce SF-2281 controllers that work in tandem (not RAID); while they can work like an ordinary SSD, they will instead serve as a cache for the hard disk drive.
