Solid-State Drives have come a long way to get to the level of performance and reliability that we see today, both on a consumer and enterprise level. As such, OCZ has been a pioneer in the Solid-State Drive market, delivering solutions that continue to impress. Having previously looked at the RevoDrive X2 in March of this year, we saw just what the performance potential of the RevoDrive series really was. Now, the new RevoDrive 3 X2 brings much more to the table with the latest SF 22XX series NAND controllers and OCZ's new SuperScale Storage Accelerator, which uses VCA 2.0 for increased scalability. The performance metrics are incredible in their own right; maximum reads of up to 1500 MB/s, writes of 1225 MB/s, and up to 200,000 IOPs 4 KB Random Write (QD64, 4K Aligned, 8 GB LBA). If this kind of performance doesn't catch your eye, I guess speed just does not interest you. OCZ offers the RevoDrive 3 X2 in 240 GB, 480 GB, and 960 GB capacities, with pricing starting at $699 for the 240 GB variant. For those who worry about reliability, OCZ offers a 3 year warranty on the RevoDrive 3 X2. Advertising a MTBF of over a million hours, the drive should last much longer than the warranty term though.
OCZ just keeps pushing the envelope on its PCI Express SSDs. The first RevoDrive contained two 60GB SF-1200-powered SSDs in RAID 0, with a Silicon Image PCI-to-SATA controller. The RevoDrive X2 kept the same architecture, but added a second PCB with two additional controllers and two more 60GB sets of NAND. OCZ’s RevoDrive3 X2 updates the platform to second-generation SandForce, but the new SSD controller isn’t the only change. The OCZ RevoDrive3 X2 contains four second-gen SandForce SF-2281 solid-state drive controllers, each with 16 8GB Micron 25nm asynchronous NAND modules. The RevoDrive3 X2 is, then, essentially four 120GB OCZ Agility 3 drives in RAID 0. But in place of the Silicon Image controller that powered the first two RevoDrive generations, OCZ has opted for a custom “OCZ SuperScale” SCSI controller. The company has declined to disclose which OEM is building the new controller, but it puts out a lot more heat than the old Silicon Image chip; in fact, OCZ slapped on a heatsink to prevent it from overheating. Earlier RevoDrives were marketed to enthusiasts, but you’ll find the RevoDrive3 X2 under the “Workstation” category on OCZ’s website—with good reason: SandForce drives are already optimized for frequent small-file random reads and writes at high queue depths, and the RevoDrive3 X2’s four-drive RAID takes that to absurd levels.
Too much performance is a nice problem to have. It is still a problem though, especially in the context of some solid state drives. But not the new OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 480GB. OCZ claims it's capable of read speeds up to 1.5GB/s. That's monumental bandwidth by any measure and much, much more than even the latest SATA 6Gbps interface can handle. In practice, a mere 500MB/s of sequential bandwidth can be enough to saturate a SATA interface. That's why drives powered by the latest SandForce SSD controller, such as OCZ's own Vertex 3 or Corsair's Force GT, can't quite reach their full potential on a SATA connection. There's simply not enough available bandwidth. But the OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 480GB is no ordinary SSD. It sports no less than four of the snazziest Sandforce SF-2281 controller chips. It is, in effect, four 120GB Sandforce-powered SSDs running in a parallel RAID array for maximum performance. Crucially, however, it hooks them in via a speedy four-lane PCI Express connection. On paper, that allows up to 2GB/s of bandwidth. In other words, if the RevoDrive 3 doesn't deliver on its theoretical capabilities, it won't be able to point the finger at the SATA port. And some capabilities the Revodrive has, if OCZ's performance claims are accurate.
If you've been reading the pages of HotHardware for any length of time, you've probably noticed that we have an affinity for just about anything SSD related. As performance enthusiasts at heart, it's no wonder why we're keenly focused on the market segment, but even so, there are standout products that tend to pique our interest more than others. And in the burgeoning SSD market, there's nothing more interesting than PCI Express based SSDs. In recent months we've covered PCI Express-based SSDs from virtually all the major players, from Fusion-io to, OCZ and LSI. The last time we took a look at OCZ's offering, the RevoDrive X2 took to the test bench and with its MLC-based design, offered much of the performance of significantly more expensive SLC-based PCI Express SSDs, but at a fraction of the cost. Today the third coming of the RevoDrive from OCZ is upon us, with all new technology on board, from its Flash controllers to the RAID processor. With read/write specs that will make you drool, the RevoDrive 3 X2 is here and if it lives up to its specifications on paper, we think you're going to want to stick around for the intimate details on the pages that follow.
