SSD's are growing ever more popular, and we've reviewed a lot of them by now. Today we're checking out the 256GB version of OCZ's newest addition to the SSD lineup: the OCZ Agility 4. OCZ makes a wide range of SSD's, targeted towards various markets. The OCZ Agility 4 is an SSD targeted at the mainstream market. OCZ's high-end SSD's, the Vertex line, are targeted towards the performance/enthusiasts' market. The OCZ budget line is primarily occupied by caching SSD's, which are designed to be paired with a hard drive to give the platter drive a speed boost. The Agility 4 SSD comes with the Indilinx Everest 2 controller, which is capable of the 6Gbps of bandwidth transferred by the SATA III interface. Today we're reviewing the 256GB version of this drive, which can retail around $160 online. The Agility 4 SSD comes with a considerable list of features. The most important you should look for at this stage is the SATA III support. Before mid-2011, this kind of support was highly uncommon. However, the second generation of SSD controllers (such as the Indilinx Everest 2 or SandForce SF-2281) permitted for 6Gbps support, and the majority of SSD's now come with this capability. For those who may not follow SSD's, this is very important as the older 3Gbps limit of SATA II will bottleneck a solid-state drive.
Back in July we took a look at the Vertex 4 solid state drive from OCZ. This was the first consumer solid state drive from OCZ to use the Indilinx Everest 2 controller. Today we are looking at OCZ's second solid state drive to use that controller, the Agility 4. The Agility 4 features read and write speeds of 420MB/s read and 410MB/s write respectively. Since OCZ has been making solid state drives they have always had the Vertex line and Agility line. The Vertex line was always the high-end enthusiast product, while the Agility was aimed for the mainstream. It is no different here, unlike the Vertex 4 that uses synchronous NAND the Agility 4 uses asynchronous NAND and is much less expensive. As of this review the Agility 4 is $189.99 for the $256GB version. Read on as we check the Agility 4 out! OCZ has gone away from their normal SSD packaging for the Agility 4. It comes in a clear clamshell package. The front is open so you can take a look at the drive and also lists the capacity, which in our case is 256GB. The back of the package has some information about the drive. To give you a good idea of how the Agility 4 comes and for a brief overview check out our video below.
History has shown that the solid state drive has had a profound impact on the end user. Drastically reduced access times and much faster read/write throughput have been benefits to users willing to make that jump from a traditional spindle drive to a NAND-based solution. OCZ has led the way through several iterations of it popular Vertex and Agility lineup, with the former the high end offering and the Agility targeted at the mainstream. Version four for each drive maintains this status quo with the Agility 4 targeted for use by the mainstream user. As such OCZ has targeted both of the impediments to SSD adoption in both capacity and cost. Priced at $189, the Agility 4 256GB delivers capacity and a price per GB of less than 75 cents. Not bad at all when you look at just strictly the price point. Having already looked at several drives based on OCZ's own Indilinx Everest 2 controller, including the OCZ Vertex 4 and OCZ Octane, it has been shown that OCZ's acquisition of Indilinx has paid dividends.
