OCZ Agility 3 240GB review

SandForce's hotly anticipated new SF-2200 controller? Check. 240GB of solid state memory? Yup. SATA 6Gbps support? Affirmative. Sequential read and write performance in the 500MB/s ball park? Oh, yes. Just what separates this OCZ Agility 3 drive from its seemingly identical Vertex 3 sibling? Not a lot, as it happens. But there is one difference. The Agility 3 makes do with asynchronous rather than synchronous NAND memory. But what, exactly, does this mean? Asynchronous NAND is cheaper and cheaper usually means slower. In this case, the reasons are rather subtle and involve the way flash memory chips sync with other parts of the SSD chipset over a given clock cycle. But the crucial upshot is that the asynchronous NAND limits the Agility 3 to 50MB/s per channel, whereas the Vertex punches out 200MB/s. DuraWrite maths rewrite Now, that does seem like a yawning gap in performance. Given that both drives have eight memory channels, it also begs the question of how the Agility 3 can possibly deliver 500MB/s. Do the maths. It doesn't add up. The answer, of course, is SandForce's DuraWrite technology which cleverly compresses data before it's stored in the NAND cells, effectively boosting bandwidth.

OCZ Agility 3 240GB Review

OCZ already ships two drives with the blazing-fast SF-2281 controller—the Vertex 3 and the firmware-tweaked Max IOPS Vertex 3. So, why a third? Like its predecessors the Agility and Agility 2, the Agility 3 is OCZ’s “mainstream” SSD for this generation. So what distinguishes it from the Vertex 3, and is there any reason to buy it? Like other 240GB SandForce drives, the Agility 3 uses 256GB of NAND, with 16GB devoted to overprovisioning. Unlike the Vertex 3 and OWC’s Mercury Extreme Pro, which use synchronous NAND for their storage, the Agility 3 uses asynchronous, which is slower. The good news is that the Agility’s use of cheaper NAND only becomes a problem in a few situations, most of which are unlikely to impact home users. The slowdown is only apparent in tests that read and write large amounts of incompressible data to disk, like AS SSD and CrystalDiskMark. Since a large part of SandForce’s speed advantage is its compression algorithm, the slower NAND in the Agility 3 can’t keep up, and the Agility 3 clocked in around 210MB/s reads and 240MB/s writes in those tests. In tests that more closely mirror most real-world scenarios—such as PCMark Vantage and PCMark 11, Premiere Pro, and IOmeter—the Agility 3 performs nearly as well as SF-2281 drives that use synchronous NAND.

OCZ Agility 3 - 60 GB - SATA-600

The OCZ Agility 3 is a small step down from its big brother, the OCZ Vertex 3. The new drive is slower and doesn't include a drive bay converter to conveniently fit in a desktop computer. Other than that, it shares the same design and features as the Vertex 3, meaning it can be used in any application where current SATA hard drives would be used. With speed that's easily twice that of a regular platter-based hard drive, the Agility is best suited for a laptop or a high-performance desktop, especially one that supports SATA 6Gbps. At its street price of around $470 for the 240GB capacity ($240 for 120GB, $140 for 64GB), the Agility 3 is slightly cheaper than other SSDs. That's not much of an advantage, however, as it's noticeably slower than other SATA 6Gbps SSDs. That said, the OCZ Agility 3 is still very fast, even among SSDs, and will increase a computer's performance significantly compared with a regular hard drive. For more SSD options, however, don't forget to also consider the Vertex 3, the Plextor PX-256M2S, or, if your computer only supports SATA 3Gbps, the Samsung 470. The OCZ Agility 3 and the OCZ Vertex 3 share the same shape, dimensions, and port design as a standard 9.5mm, 2.5-inch internal hard drive.
