Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 review

The Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 is in serious gamers' graphics card territory, without hitting the big prices. Nvidia doesn't have a great lineup in the budget segment of cards, and anything lower than this here GeForce GTS 450 isn't really worth a look for those with any passing interest in frame rates. This venerable card does have some gaming chops to offer, and for the £81 cost it's a tough card to argue against. The version we've tested is the standard reference version directly from Nvidia. That means it has no extras, no funky third-party cooling solution and definitely no factory overclock. We've taken the price from the cheapest GTS 450 we've found available, and that's the version from Palit. It does come with a slightly different cooler, but the GPU itself is in reference trim.Immediately you can feel the step up in performance terms with this gaming-oriented card. With DiRT 3 and Far Cry 2 we saw the card hit 32fps and 52fps respectively, and that's with 4x AA running at very playable speeds. The Shogun 2 and Metro 2033 scores, though, are much lower, with the Shogun 2 score especially highlighting Nvidia's performance weakness with this title. But for £80-odd you can't complain.

Graphics Card Reviews

With the GeForce GTS 450, NVIDIA is storming its way into the very interesting market for mid-range graphics cards with a direct competitor for the Radeon HD 5700 from AMD. Does NVIDIA's card have what it takes to give AMD a run for its money? Let's find out! Size, Noise and Heat The GTS 450 is almost identical in size to the GeForce GTX 460 (20.5 cm) and only requires one PCI-Express power connection. That's pretty good too. Plus, given its size, the card can be easily fitted in to the vast majority of computer casings. The integrated cooling system has a double-decker design. The fan is quite big but doesn't entirely expel hot air from the casing. However, that won't really be a problem as this model doesn't get all that hot: we measured 71°C with video games. One of the most interesting features of this graphics card is how little noise it makes when in operation. We didn't hear any real difference between using it in 3D games and in 2D mode. We measured just 36.8 db(A) in 3D, which makes this card very quiet indeed. In fact, it's one of the best in the field. Energy Consumption Just like the GTX 460, the GeForce GTS 450 is very energy efficient. In its resting state, our machine only showed a consumption of 85 W.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450

A couple of weeks ago, NVIDIA unveiled what could be the final graphics card model to help complete it's mainstream to high-end GeForce 400 line-up, the GeForce GTS 450 (GF106). At ~$130, it becomes a direct competitor to AMD's Radeon HD 5750 - a card that came out last November. It took NVIDIA a while to get to this point, but we can hope that with Fermi's strong points, the company's latest offering will shake things up. Currently, the GTS 450 is NVIDIA's lowest-end Fermi offering that's actually available to consumers, but in early September, the company quietly released its GT 420 budget card, one best suited for HTPCs or as an IGP replacement. Unfortunately, this model is only available to OEMs right now, so for those hoping for a budget GF100 solution, you'll have to wait longer. With the GTS 450 priced at around ~$130, it stands to be a good offering for those who don't want to spend much on a graphics card, but don't exactly want to forego pretty graphics or a decent resolution. As we've seen with our previous HD 5750 testing, these affordable cards offer a pretty surprising bang for the buck, and with resolutions of 1080p or lower, should prove suitable for a lot of people.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 Affordable DX11 GPU

NVIDIA may have had to navigate a tumultuous path on their way to releasing the company's first DirectX 11 desktop GPU, the GF100-based GeForce GTX 480, though they seem to be firing on all cylinders at this point. In the last 5 or so months since the GeForce GTX 480 arrived, NVIDIA has released—or will imminently release—a slew of other new DX11-class GPUs, targeted at markets ranging from low-power thin-and-light notebooks to mid-range desktop gaming systems. And the GTX 480 remains the company's flagship desktop product. NVIDIA has also optimized their software and drivers to wring significantly more performance from their newest GPUs. Things seem to be looking up. The most recent NVIDIA GPU released for the desktop market, the GeForce GTX 460, proved to be an excellent performer for the money. In the conclusion of our GTX 460 coverage, we stated, \"The GeForce GTX 460 is simply one of the most appealing DirectX 11-class graphics cards out there. They're affordably priced, perform very well, they're a reasonable size and quiet”. Since the GeForce GTX 460 hit the scene a couple of months ago, prices on the cards have dropped somewhat, making them even more attractive.
