Earlier this year, the Z68 chipset was launched by Intel as a way to take advantage of all the benefits of the P67 and H67 chipsets all in one package — not to mention the snafu with the P67 chipset's SATA 3Gbps controller that was quickly resolved by Intel. At launch, we looked at MSI’s top offering equipped with the Z68 chipset, the Z68A-GD80 B3 revision, and found it to be a fully loaded board that offered tremendous upside and overclocking to match the feature set — things like Smart Caching technology, switchable graphics, Military Class II component selection, OC Genie one touch overclocking, uEFI bios. and more. Here we are that few months down the line and we have an update to the Z68A-GD80 with the G3 (Generation 3), which brings along an updated feature set to take advantage of Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge lineup, like a pair of 16x PCIe Gen 3 slots that deliver multi-GPU Gen3 bandwidth, an improved implementation of MSI’s Click BIOS, with Click BIOS II, support for 2.2TB and greater disk drives, and a much improved user interface. The warranty period is another upsell from MSI, with the G3 revisions of the Z68A-GD80 and GD65 seeing an increase to five years from the previous three years . Performance-wise, this revision is not going to differ from the B3 revision, but just provides a way to prepare for the future launch. Let's dig a little deeper into what the MSI Z68A-GD80 has to offer.
This year at Computex 2011, MSI showed off their latest PCI-E Gen 3 motherboard. When Z68 launched, motherboard manufacturers continued using the most widely available PCI-Express 2.0 interface. As weeks passed, new PCI-Express 3.0 switches were introduced and MSI was the first to jump on the opportunity to provide their customers with the latest PCI-E Gen 3.0 support for their LGA1155 Z68 boards. ASRock and GIGABYTE followed closely as they also showed off their ASRock Extreme 4 Gen 3 and GIGABYTE G1.Sniper 2 motherboards with PCI-E Gen 3 support. Today we will be looking at the MSI Z68A-GD80 (G3) motherboard. This motherboard is an upgrade from the (B3) revision, which still used PCI-E 2.0 switches. Though while MSI was one of the first to have a PCI-E Gen 3 motherboard, it also looks like they might have one of the first true Gen 3 designs, with GIGABYTE coming in 2nd with their G1.Sniper 2 motherboard. It is not a coincidence that ASUS, one of the largest motherboard manufacturers, still doesn't have a true PCI-E Gen 3.0 motherboard. As a matter a fact, ASRock and GIGABYTE only have partially functional PCI-E Gen 3 support for their motherboard, but more on that on our motherboard overview page.
Just a few short months ago the Intel Sandybridge platform was introduced to the world. This new platform showed great promise and stunning performance by comparison to the earlier Core i7 and Core i5 processors. Overclocking was rumoured to have died with the release but in reality a new bar was set with chips that seemed to go well past 4.5Ghz at will on air. Just after launch we looked at a series of P67 motherboards including the MSI P67A-GD65 and were able to see the performance scale with more capable boards. One thing missing was the ability to use the Intel HD 3000 graphics on our K SKU processors with the P67 boards as this ability was limited to the H67 chipset based which in itself was limited by the inability to overclock above the limits of the Turbo Boost ratios. Now we have the best of both worlds with the release of Z68 chipset motherboards such as the MSI Z68A-GD80 I am looking at today. Add in dynamic graphics switching and Intel Smart Response technology and the latest chipset looks pretty interesting. What you get with the MSI Z68A-GD80 is a full featured motherboard with all of the MSI engineering and Military Class II build up that includes DRmos, Hi-C capacitors and Dynamic switching Super Ferrite Chokes, OC Genie 1 touch overclocking, Voltage Check points and more.
