MSI X460DX-006US

The MSI X460DX is a slim yet powerful laptop, and it carries a decent price tag. With two USB 3.0 ports, a second-generation Intel Core i5 processor, and a discrete graphics card under its hood, the X460DX will no doubt tempt any mobile power user. Our review model, priced at $830 (as of September 27, 2011), came packed with a Core i5-2410M processor, 6GB of RAM, a 500GB Seagate hard drive (spinning at 7200 rpm), and an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M discrete graphics card with Optimus auto-switching technology. The X460DX also features built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, stereo speakers, and a webcam. Our review model ran the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. The MSI X460DX managed a decent WorldBench 6 benchmark score of 120. Although that isn't the best WorldBench 6 score we've seen, especially in the X460DX's category of all-purpose laptops, it is a fairly high mark considering the price and weight of the machine. The Dell Latitude E6420 ATG, for instance, earned a WorldBench 6 score of 136, but it also costs about $3000. And the $1500 Dell XPS 15z reached a mark of 134--but at 5.6 pounds, it's more than a pound heavier than the 4.3-pound X460DX. Using its discrete GeForce GT 540M graphics card, the X460DX achieved okay scores in our graphics tests.

MSI X460DX 14" Core i5 Notebook Review

Thin–and–light is back. If you have any doubts whatsoever, just take a look at the notebook landscape as it is today. Outside of those monster gaming laptops and desktop replacements that still demand their own massive amount of real estate, most everything else these days seems to be aiming for thin. MSI's lineup is no different, with the company's new X460 and X460DX aiming for a solid balance of power and portability. MSI's X Series should be no stranger to those reading these pages, and the unit here on our test bed certainly appears to kick things up a notch. The X460DX straddles two of the more popular form-factors today. It's not an ultraportable, and it's not a mainstream 15 incher. Instead, its 14 inch-form factor gives mobile consumers another choice. It's a platform size that we don't think is used nearly enough, and it doesn't get nearly enough attention. That said, MSI has decided to tickle our fancy here, and the internal specifications are just as intriguing as the outside chassis. Let's take a look at what makes this thing tick. The X460DX starts at just under $800, with our test unit ringing up at $850. For that tally, the specifications list is pretty darn impressive.

MSI X460DX Review

The $849 Intel Core i5-powered MSI X460DX packs plenty of power into an attractive 1-inch thick aluminum chassis. The 14-inch X460DX's vibrant display and Nvidia GPU make watching videos and playing games an engaging experience, while a powerful battery and Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics allow the notebook to last nearly all day. But are these pros enough to overcome a few issues with build and keyboard quality?The MSI X460DX's Metallic Black brushed-aluminum finish is simple but elegant. A raised chrome MSI logo in the center and a plastic black bar across the top give the lid a small flourish. When we pressed down on the front portion of the lid, we noticed a small but disturbing amount of flex. We also could feel some friction on the hinges as we opened and closed the lid, a sign of shoddy build quality.While the palm rest has the same brushed-aluminum finish as the lid, the remaining interior is done in glossy black plastic surrounding a black matte keyboard. A slim chrome bar rests across the speakers with a smaller bar across the clear textured power button. Additional chrome accents can be found on the buttons for the S Bar and Turbo Battery + feature, a thin strip surrounding the touchpad, and the mouse button.
