MSI's latest version of the X-Slim X370 is more affordable than an ultrabook, has a 13.3-inch screen and, rather than an Intel processor, uses an AMD Fusion E-450 APU. Will the MSI X370 help AMD to return to form in the mobile laptop segment or is Intel destined to rule the roost with its ultrabooks for some time to come? In spite of all the plastic, MSI has come up with a nice-looking chassis. The coating on the hood may well be glossy, but the fact that it’s white means that you don’t notice finger marks as much as you would with black. Only the palm rest needs revisiting in terms of finish: it tends to sink in when you press down on it. On the visuals available on the Internet this laptop looks flat but its 8-cell battery (sold as standard on the model tested) sticks out quite a bit and makes it quite a bit thicker. The keyboard is in the chiclet style. The keys are well-proportioned, well-positioned and make for supple, instinctive keying that minimises errors and gives the user a comfortable typing experience. The only exception is the Enter key that’s quite small and therefore sometimes causes keying errors.
There was a period of time last year where it seemed like every other ultraportable was based on Intel's CULV platform. At the time, we figured that was just the way it was going to be for a while with ultralight notebooks. But then, AMD finally got around to shipping some Fusion based APUs. And since then, the mobile space has been hopping with new activity. Consumers have never had such a wealth of notebook options to choose from, and with Fusion, prices are remaining reasonable and battery life is improving too. MSI's X-Slim lineup garnered industry-wide praise when launched a couple of years ago, and now the line-up is stepping up to Fusion. The X-Slim X370 is the company's newest ultraslim machine, and while it doesn't look too different than X-Slim machines of the past, the internals are definitely deserving of a closer look. The X370 is powered by a dual-core E-350 Accelerated Processing Unit, and it's joined by a very nice list of extras. We'll break those down below. $599.99 doesn't make this a "bargain" machine, but look at what you get. A highly mobile, 13.4" machine with AMD's latest HD-crunching Fusion platform, a robust 4GB of RAM, a spacious 500GB HDD and an 8-cell battery.
Who doesn't like a price cut? When we last visited the MSI X series, the 13-inch X350 offered plenty of style and long battery life but weak integrated graphics for a high price of $999. Now MSI has switched to AMD's Fusion processor and lowered the price to $649 ($749 with 8-cell battery), promising beefier graphics and even longer endurance. Sounds like a steal on paper, but is this ultraportable machine really a bargain?Slim and stylish, the MSI X370 definitely stands out. The top lid is a glossy black plastic with a honeycomb pattern that does a decent job of hiding smudge marks, while the undercarriage is made from a single sheet of sturdy midnight black plastic. We especially like the ridge-textured palm rest. Also made of plastic, this area flexes under pressure but looks good when paired with all the chrome-painted trim surrounding the touchpad. At a slim 13 x 8.8 x 0.8 inches and single hand-friendly 3.4 pounds (with the 4-cell battery), the MSI X370 is the exact same size as its older sibling, the MSI X350. An 8-cell battery adds a little less than half a pound for a final weight of 3.8 pounds, plus about a quarter of an inch in resting height.
