Neither the MSI GX640-098US’s specs nor its $1,200 price tag necessarily scream “mobile gaming rig,” but the notebook’s highlighted W, A, S, and D keys say otherwise. So when the GX480 showed up on our doorstep, we wondered if the moderately powered notebook could muster up enough moxie to satisfy mobile gamers on a budget. The 15.4-inch display is certainly not the largest-size screen you’re going to find on a gaming notebook; but when you’re making concessions to save some dough, screen size is one of the easiest areas to cut costs. The display’s 1680x1050 native resolution is a pleasant surprise, though, which is higher than the 1366x768 native res of Asus’s 16-inch N61J desktop-replacement. Other than screen size, the GX640 and N61J share very similar specs. They are both powered by a 2.26GHz Core i5-430M processor and 4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, and both come with 7,200rpm 500GB hard drives. The N61J has at least two distinct advantages over the GX640, however, with USB 3.0 support and a price tag that’s $300 lower. The two units also differ in their choice of GPUs.
It doesn't cost a lot to be a gaming enthusiast these days. All you need is a laptop that runs a half-decent processor and a midrange graphics card. The MSI GX640-098US ($1,099 street) is packed with parts that didn't drop a single frame while running some of the most advanced 3D games. It did run warm at times, since these are hot parts packed into a 15-inch frame - small by gaming standards. But the GX640 is priced aggressively, making it easy to forget its flaws. Like the 17-inch MSI GX720, the GX640 sports a charcoal black lid made out of brushed aluminum and bright red streaks lining the edges, but it has a smaller 15-inch footprint. Gaming laptops, like the Alienware M15x (Core i7) ($3,244.00 direct, ) and M17x ($4,850 direct, ), use metals throughout the chassis. Gaming laptops that have 17-inch and 18-inch widescreens, such as the HP Pavilion dv7-3180us ($1,449 list, ) and Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q850 ($1,899 direct, ), are heavier (in the 7- to 9-pound range). Because it uses heavy metals in its chassis, the Alienware M17x tips the scales at 12.5 pounds. Its 15-inch widescreen makes the GX640 more mobile than the HP dv7-3180us or Toshiba X505-Q850. The size of its screen is the same as that of the Alienware M15x, but it has a lower screen resolution than the M15x's 1,920 by 1,080 screen.
