MSI GT660

The MSI GT660, with its powerful nVidia GPU and forceful looks, is aimed squarely at gamers, but it's also a surprisingly competent desktop replacement laptop. Look past the slightly over-the-top styling, and you'll find great performance, outstanding input devices, and state-of-the-art connectivity. The only downside is that the 1366-by-768, 16-inch display doesn't support full-resolution 1080p HD playback. The MSI GT660 is more reminiscent(in a good way) of a 1950s-era Cadillac or 1970s-era muscle car than anything military or sci-fi--the styling gambits that designers favor for current gaming laptops. Put another way, it's more Grand Theft Auto or Mafia II than Halo. Across the top of the deck are several buttons bounded by a V-shaped piece of chrome trim, which is largely responsible for the antique Caddy vibe. The buttons allow you to enable or disable the wireless, Bluetooth, Eco mode--different power saving/display settings for playing movies, gaming, presentations, and so on--and Turbo overclocking mode, as well as the unit's decorative LEDs.

Laptop Reviews: Compare Laptops and Notebooks

MSI likes gamers and regularly makes it known by bringing out new laptops for "Hardcore Gamers". The GT660 is the latest in this so-called gaming range and once again offers high-level performance as well as audio from Dynaudio. As a "Gamer" PC, the MSI GT660 aims to stand out and show what it has under the hood! It uses nice orange LED lighting (different effects can also be activated) on the sides of the screen and on the front. This attention-grabbing lighting is highlighted by the glossy plastic that's liberally spread around the computer. Unfortunately, the effect isn't very flattering, not to mention the inevitable finger marks that gradually cover all the gloss (from the hood to the keyboard). Thankfully, overall it looks quite robust and the screen hinge seems to be made to last. Note however a few slightly random modifications above the keyboard and around the screen. The keyboard is a full one with a number pad. It's nice to use in spite of the size of the keys (15 x 15 mm). Keying is firm and quite quiet. Above the keyboard you'll find multimedia keys to activate "Turbo" or "Eco" mode, increase the fan speed (hairdryer mode guaranteed), deactivate the LED lighting or activate/deactivate wi-fi and Bluetooth.

MSI GT660

MSI is out to prove that powerful gaming chops doesn't necessarily mean a large and barely portable notebook. The flashy GT660 is heavy, yes, but not so big that users won't be able to carry it in a normal laptop bag. Plus, the flashy lights outside and the Core i7 CPU inside means you won't embarrass yourself at a LAN party. You won't get the full HD experience here, but the GT660's excellent display and juiced Nvidia graphics make this $1,849 system worth a serious look.Aesthetically, there's a lot going on with the GT660. Almost too much. Unlike the GT725 and GT627, which lacked the audacious flair of most gaming notebooks, it seems like MSI pulled together as many cool-looking elements as they could while still keeping the GT660 below two grand. So it's got some funky cuts along the edges and a glossy, beveled lid complete with glowing MSI logo.Under the hood you start to notice how busy the GT600 looks. There's a mix of matte and glossy--though the latter dominates--and the piano black of the display bezel and top of the deck fades into a glossy slate color, which then turns into a textured honeycomb pattern on the palm rest surrounding the touchpad.
