MSI 990FXA-GD80

Ever since the release of the AMD FX-8150, the field has been widened for 990FX based motherboards. Many 990FX motherboards were released prior to the launch of AMD's Bulldozer, however, their potential was limited by the fact athat they were working off the old Phenom architecture of CPU. The launch of Bulldozer allows the 990FX to unleash its true potential, and the motherboard manufactuerers have release some excellent motherboards in anticipation of that. The MSI 990FXA-GD80 is one of these boards, and today, we'll be taking an in-depth look at it. The 990FXA-GD80 is a shiny addition to the MSI gaming line, and comes stacked with attractive features such as stronger capacitors and more powerful core chokes. It also has the ability to run a 3-way SLI or 4-way CrossFireX configuration. Even more attractively, it features full support for SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0. All these features add up to an extremely powerful board, that looks nice and sounds like it can deliver. Stay tuned as we take a look at whether the MSI 990FXA-GD80 is worth its $195 price tag. Features Worth Noting MSI offers a 5 year warranty for their 990FXA-GD80 motherboard within the United States and Canada.

MSI 990FXA GD-80 Review

Over the past few years MSI has been a company that has catered to the enthusiast and developed products with the feature sets that we like to see and use. Things like its OC Genie and now OC Genie II one touch hardware-based overclocking system make it easy for the novice to get a boost in performance with little or no overclocking knowledge needed, all by pushing a button and powering on the system. Things like their Military Class(II) build philosophy, DrMOS, Active Phase switching, and more add value, stability and reliability to the motherboards design. New with the 990FXA-GD80 is the addition of a uEFI BIOS that is leaps and bounds above what was offered earlier in the year. This addition brings with it support for 3TB hard drives. Although this board has been out since June, it received support for AMD's FX-8150 8 core processor and is the top of the line AMD based board in MSI's lineup. As such, the expectation is that it will be a high performing board. Let's see how it performs against the competition. If the levels of performance of its Intel-based boards are any indication, than the 990FXA-GD80 should do well.

MSI 990FXA-GD80 review

The big difference between this 990FXA-GD80 and MSI's much cheaper 970A-GD45 (besides the befuddling array of characters) is the chipset. The 990FX chipset will let you play with multiple graphics cards, whether they're Nvidia or AMD-flavoured. So if you're one of those rare slobbering maniacs with two Nvidia graphics cards and a penchant for AMD processors, this board will allow you to play out your sick SLI fantasy. Does that justify double the expense of the 970A-GD45? Certainly not – let's hope there's more on offer than just versatile GPU support and a lightening of the wallet. At £135 it's looking quite an expensive proposition. It does little more than right the wrongs of cheaper boards – ASRock's Fatal1ty 990FX Professional and the Asus Crosshair V Formula shower extra features on the ever grateful user. So, whatcha got, MSI? Okay, well it does have the OC Genie. The 248 per cent performance boost it promises is complete rubbish of course, but it's a hassle-free way to overclock and a great starting point for further tweaking.
